You understand terms like scapegoating because you've lived it. You have constant anxiety and intrusive thoughts. You're hypervigilant. Your brain never shuts down. Sometimes, you might think you're dissociating. If this is you, I'm your girl. Nearly 80% of my practice is focused on helping survivors of narcissistic abuse. I can help.

Welcome to the wonderful world of searching for a therapist. I often tell my clients that finding a therapist is like finding someone to date. It is quite exhausting. To help you narrow down your search, I focus on individuals whose difficulties are primarily Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or multiple types of Anxiety Disorders. If you are looking to for a therapist to vent to, I am probably not your ideal therapist. I work with my clients to really challenge their thinking and into areas that "seem" impossible with a little bit of humor and a whole lot of authenticity.

Anxiety and depression can be overwhelming and interfere with reaching your highest potential. It’s incredibly uncomfortable to feel your heart and mind race or to have shortness of breath. You worry about when a panic attack will happen again and the worry makes matters even worse. You just want to slow your mind down and quit thinking. Your relationships and work performance may be suffering as you lie in bed dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. You've tried everything to control your thoughts and feelings but can't.

Do you ever feel like you are putting on a happy face to get through the day, only to come home, emotionally drained, and just tired of faking it? Are you ready to take the next step but have spent so long feeling like a burden that speaking about your problems seems almost impossible? Starting therapy can be frightening and, for a lot of us, talking about our feelings doesn’t come easy. That's ok. (Seriously!) I want you to know that it's normal to feel nervous at first and that it is worth it to get your life back. Together, we will work towards helping you live a better life - however that may be defined for you.

Accepting new clients! I am passionate about working with children and their families. Children are learning about the world around them and they often don't know what their feelings mean or how to communicate them quite yet. When children have been through stressful things, it is even harder for them to express their feelings. And those feelings can come out of kids in big ways! As adults, we can struggle to understand how to help young ones when their emotions get really big. As their adult, you want to help your child and you also need someone to support you. That is where I can help.

As an EMDR therapist, I feel great passion for helping clients recover from adverse or traumatic experiences and walking alongside them as they begin to see the world through a new lens. Trauma and other mental health struggles greatly affect our important relationships - and our relationships impact our mental health. Helping clients build healthy relationships is central to my therapeutic approach. Together, we'll foster self-understanding and self-compassion, uproot negative or limiting patterns that no longer serve you, and work collaboratively to discover your most authentic 'you.' We'll find ways to infuse a little humor, too!

You feel drained, exhausted and completely frustrated. Your partner is clueless about how to connect with you and you are sure there is no possible way you could make it clearer! They’re just as angry and frustrated. The tension is palpable. And you feel, naturally, angry, lonely, tired. It’s painful. You have put your heart in to this relationship and you are not ready to throw in the towel but the attempts you each make to fix it only land with a thud and result in you both feeling like a failure.

Accepting new telehealth clients in Ohio and Florida. You may be feeling "not yourself," uncertain, or stuck. We will work together to find a way that respects your right to tell your own story, and next steps that align with what you value. There is a little voice in your head that keeps telling you that you cannot do it. You're not good enough. That voice continues to plague you with doubt, anxiety, confusion, and anger. You question: Who am I? What am I supposed to be doing? You are constantly trying to implement change but find yourself unmotivated, procrastinating, and feeling “lazy.” You try and it just feels too hard. The voice in the back of your head becomes louder and reminds you that changing is hard. You’re then left to spiral into a ball of anxiety or depression.

Hi friends, my name is Carolyn "Caro" Bird, and I love calling Wilmington "home" after a life of hopping state-to-state as an Army Brat! I'm passionate about working with adults of all ages, veterans and their families, and the first responder community. In session, I pair warmth, humor, and compassion but I'm not afraid to dig into the hard and messy parts of life with you. Although trauma is my primary specialty, I am also interested in working with clients struggling with anxiety, feelings of overwhelm, depression, transitional seasons, body image, shame, emotional eating, and self-esteem issues.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
