Or maybe you just don't feel like yourself anymore and are questioning where you fit in. Let’s face it, life can be challenging and confusing. I AM NOT CURRENTLY TAKING NEW CLIENTS! My goal as a therapist is to help you uncover your true potential & lead a life that is worth celebrating. I work to provide a safe and nurturing enviornment where you can receive support, guidance & feedback as I help guide you towards positive change. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand & resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches & techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling &meaningful life.

Anyone can benefit from therapy, whether you are struggling with a specific issue or have a desire to learn more about yourself for personal growth. Sometimes we need a supportive and objective person to guide us so we can uncover and break down any barriers that interfere with our happiness. My goal is to provide the space for you to do just that - to explore your thoughts, emotions, and behavior patterns in a safe, judgment-free environment. I am especially interested in working with those dealing with adoption related and gender identity related issues.

Do you struggle with low self-esteem, anxiety, negative self-talk, feeling not good enough, feeling like a failure, or feeling like you're somehow flawed or unworthy? Do you compare yourself to others and feel like you fall short? Or does it feel like no matter how hard you try, it's never good enough? While you may already have a pretty good idea where these feelings may be coming from, you may not know how to get out of them. No matter how much you try to 'think positive', the old feelings still come back to plague you.

Welcome and congratulations on taking the first step so that life may get different for you. The beauty and benefits of re-examining how we can make changes in our lives, continues to fuel my passion for therapeutic dialogue. The integrative nature of my work allows for us to look at family of origin explanations, without blaming, so that you can move toward change. When what feels like roadblocks comes up there are a number of tools that can help, like increasing mindfulness and learning more around boundaries and assertive communication.

We all seek increased meaning, along with deeper purpose and stronger connections. But change can be hard! When pain or fear predominate, we are unable to tolerate stress or to be spontaneous. Together, we will address self-limitations like shame, people-pleasing, or perfectionism. I look forward to working with individuals facing life transitions including grief and loss, divorce, marriage, career change, maintaining recovery, gender assignment exploration or those seeking deeper meaning.

Whatever the present condition of our life, we have had an intrinsic role in creating it, whether we see it or not. The good news is that once we have enough awareness to take ownership, we can consciously create what is next. Our greatest ally is self awareness and clarity. My role as a therapist is to help you identify and resolve your obstacles (internal and external) and to help you clarify your life purpose and direction. In an empathic relationship that stresses authenticity, our processes will lead to in depth exploration and releasing.

One trend I've noticed is the high percentage of truly unique and sensitive people who walk through my door. It seems some of the finest folks wind up getting lost in this world, not because they have less of an internal compass, but ironically because they have more. In a culture that prizes quick solutions and uniformity, having a voice of one's own, ideas of one's own, puts the complex and innovative individual at increased risk for mental distress. Living out loud is psychologically expensive; together we will work so you can afford to be heard.

My counseling clinic name is Pain Alternatives because my early practice was primarily in structural medicine. I became interested in mental wellness after years of seeing the inextricable connectedness of mental and physical pain. In my current practice, I use a time-limited dynamic psychotherapy model, and medication prescription and management wherever clinically appropriate. You can come for medication management alone, for counseling alone, or for a combination of medication prescription and management with counseling sessions.

For me, “psychotherapy has to do with…people playing together.” My therapeutic approach is grounded in practicality, metaphor, and paradox. Whether you want to examine your relationship to archetypes and epic tales, investigate the mundane and extraordinary beauty in doing the dishes, or delve into your style of relating to another being: bring all of it - it is welcome and deserving of your attention. Fundamentally, I am fascinated by people - our stories, our journeys and our capacities for grace and awe.

My approach to therapy is person-centered, holistic, and strengths-based. I believe clients are the experts of their own stories, and my role as a therapist is to create a safe space for individuals to explore intersecting aspects of their identities. Therapy is not about asking “what’s wrong” and instead about building upon existing client strengths in order to create a meaningful and rich life. My toolbox consists of a variety of counseling modalities. I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dreamwork and Dream Arts Therapy.

I have 6 years of experience working with people on trauma, depression, anxiety and relationships, including family, same-sex, cross-cultural, poly relationships. I value a lot working with people from the LGBTQ+ community and diverse cultural background. Traumatic experience comes in many looks. Trauma can be anything painful that you experienced in life, and still impacts your life currently. Sometimes without proper resources and appropriate support, trauma can bring a lot of emotional suffering and damage to your quality of life.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
