An ideal client is one who is at an age that she or he is ready to settle the haunting torments of childhood abuse. She or he has enough memories to begin to work with and has enough faith to believe healing is possible. She needs a companion, a counselor, on the path to healing. She needs someone who is caring and will allow her or his to move at her or his own pace—who is motivational but not pushy. The client’s goal is to normalize important relationships in his or her current life. The client also wants peace with his or her past, as well as a balanced life in the future.
I believe that individual clients are unique. For that reason, I use an integrated approach. Generally, each client needs to recognize his or her own strengths and draw on the methods that have worked for them in the past. They also need methods to retrain their brains to react to life in a healthier manner. If they survived abuse, they have strengths.
In the best of circumstances, life is hard. I believe in a survivor’s power— they are strong because they have “survived”. The cruelty of abuse can rob a person of their confidence in their ability to overcome. Darkness has become the comfortable place but not the healthy place to dwell. I will walk with you in your dark place and help you find your light.
