I can offer classic CBT or developmental approaches to advanced technique in personality disorders and trauma.
I began my career as a child development specialist working with children with developmental delays and caregivers with mental health diagnoses. After almost 15 years in the field I have worked with all ages and all levels of functioning. This includes people struggling with making adjustments to major life changes to people designated as seriously mentally ill. I have worked for some wonderful mental health agencies where I was able to gain experience leading groups, mandated substance abuse treatment, collaborate with DCS and the probation system, and is currently an AZ Board of Behavioral Health approved supervisor.

Clients that are experiencing PTSD, anxiety, or depression could benefit from learning new coping skills and processing their trauma. Some examples of goals that previous clients have made are: decrease in symptoms, increase in self-awareness, and learning to enjoy life.

Seeking counseling services is not always easy. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment to assist in the process of psychotherapy. If you need help with psychological trauma of any kind, unresolved grief, PTSD; combat or other related, sexual trauma of any kind, alcohol or drug abuse or need after care services, please call for an appointment. The best results are always achieved when treated sooner rather than later. I also provide DMV and court mandated testing for drivers license reinstatement.

People come into counseling for many reasons. You may be overcome with insecurity, paralyzed with anxiety, or chronically depressed. Perhaps your relationships are a mess, your life feels out of control. You cut yourself to feel something other than emptiness, you drink to numb your pain. Life doesn't have to be this hard. There is hope and you can heal. You already have everything inside of you that you need in order to heal but somehow you have lost track of this truth. Life has led you away from your innate ability to heal. Counseling can help you reconnect with this ability and restore balance and peace to your life.

I offer a unique perspective in approaching mental health from a cognitive behavioral perspective, while assisting clients in recognizing how they are also affected physically.
My name is Tolana Murphy. A Deeper Knowing is my private practice. I am licensed and practice in Arizona, Ohio, and Kentucky. I come from a family background where emotional needs were not supported and psychiatric concerns were not discussed outside of a confessional. I chose to work with the elderly early on, because they were such great storytellers and usually very raw in sharing emotional and physical pain. People need to know that it is safe and okay to not only talk about both types of pain, but also to be supported and provided with tools that assist them in having their needs met.

I focus on adults of different ages and diverse backgrounds drawing on CBT, ACT, and DBT skills to help change situational perspectives.
I am a firm believer that our present self is shaped by the traumas and negative experiences we’ve survived.  In therapy, we open wounds that have been bandaged up over time. Opening up these wounds causes us to feel vulnerable, which is why it is important to me that my clients have a safe place to work through these difficult times.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) Therapists

How does cognitive behavioral therapy work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophizing or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioral therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioral therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioral therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
