Desert Life Psychotherapy provides a space to explore emotional and relational difficulties related to depression, anxiety, family conflict, and interpersonal struggles in day to day life. I provide counseling to teens and adults who are ready to begin understanding themselves in order to create a brighter and more productive future. I am most effective at treating individuals and families who are ready to understand the underlying issues leading to current symptoms through self-exploration, and are looking for insight to create lasting change in their lives.

I am a therapist who desires to create a safe, comfortable environment for you to work on what is troubling you. I see my role as assisting you to better understand your challenges, and to access your resources to address them. I have over twenty years of experience as a perinatal mental health provider, and a marriage and family therapist and clinical supervisor. I believe in the resilience of each person and bring a great deal of my own creativity and energy to each of my clients. I strive to be respectful and supportive of those I work with, and am always mindful that I am working for you, to your benefit.

Have you been struggling with trauma, emotional pain, thoughts of suicide, self-harm, or lack of support? Or have you experienced grief, loss, or complications in your relationships? If life has been difficult or unmanageable, we can come together to find balance, understanding, and relief. In addition to therapy services, I offer Clinical Supervision to therapy licensees to guide them on their journey of licensure, providing ethical and compassionate supervision. I work with individuals, specializing in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use. I have enjoyed working with clients of especially vulnerable populations such as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (including ASD), those who identify as LGBTQ+, those with histories of trauma, and other minoritized populations. Additionally, I provide individualized clinical supervision to associate-level counselors and therapists working toward independent licensure.

Note: Potential clients only, no soliciting. I have been a clinician in residential treatment for over 10 years. During that time, I treated adults of all ages with a myriad of issues. Since everyone's needs are different, I have learned to adapt my approach to the individual and their particular goals. Self-motivation to find healing is paramount to beginning the healing process. I primarily work with professionals and those willing to pursue treatment on their own. Additionally, I am a clinical supervisor and also work with Somatic Experiencing students to assist them with obtaining their certification. My practice is Telehealth.

I am currently offering supervision and training to therapists, coaches, and other professionals looking to enhance their ability to work creatively with healing arts, combining ancient wisdom with state of the art contemporary techniques, as well as technology. I draw from EMDR, Hypnotherapy, Shamanic Healing, Tantra, energy healing, ancestral lineage healing, meditation, yoga, ayurveda, dance and movement, and visual art. I work with individuals and couples who are looking for support in truly leveling up, and are done with the old paradigm. I would be honored to hold you accountable to your potential.

The decision to seek therapy is not always an easy one, but can be one of the most beneficial choices a person can make. My main priority as a therapist is to help my clients feel comfortable while offering a neutral and unbiased perspective to their current challenges. I have worked with a variety of presenting concerns, but have extensive experience in attachment-based therapeutic approaches helping couples to address communication issues, sexual relationship concerns, relationship injuries and infidelity. I also have a strong background in working with children and families in the areas of parenting and behavioral challenges.

I provide in person and virtual sessions in MI and virtual sessions in VA and AZ. I specialize in working with anxiety, depression, process grief, life transitions, and relationship dynamics. It can be difficult to recognize unhealthy patterns and there are many tools available to help develop new and healthy ways of thinking, interacting, and responding to life’s circumstances. I support you working towards goals that may include deeper sense of self awareness, better communication skills, reducing stress, strategies to manage responses to trauma, better relationship dynamics and tools for coping with anxiety and depression.

Dr. Ami Owen received her undergraduate degree in Social Science/Psychology. She received her Master’s in Family Therapy with an advanced emphasis on families and trauma. Dr. Owen also received a Doctorate in Counseling and is a Clinically Certified Trauma Professional. She is Licensed in TX, ID, WA, AZ, FL, CA, UT and a nationally approved supervisor through the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). She takes delight in mentoring therapists on the complexities of family systems and consults with providers across the country to improve systems approaches.

My EMDR training guides individuals through difficulties like depression, anxiety, anger, grief, stress, autism, family and couple issues, self-growth, self-esteem, substance abuse, sleep problems, postpartum anxiety, depression, personality disorders, and psychosis. I have worked with clients of all ages and have effectively helped clients find relief from issues such as depression, sexual issues, anxiety, PTSD and communication difficulties. As a relational therapist, I work with couples and relationships of all types, including those in the LGBTQIA+, polyamorous, and kink communities.
