My style is interpersonal and relational.
Tiered/sliding scale rates are available! Reach out for more info. Hi there, I’m Janae. I’m a secular, non-binary Licensed Professional Counselor and my pronouns are they/she. If the universe (or algorithm) has sent you to my profile, my guess is that you’ve had to bury your real values and desires in order to survive. You’re depressed, anxious, angry, addicted, and probably fucking exhausted. Possibly in physical pain too. Or maybe just numb. I work with (mostly queer) folx recovering from religious trauma and other oppressive systems because I’ve been there myself - and I can tell you that there is a way out.

I find myself most often using cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, multicultural, and psychodynamic approaches.
My priority is fostering a confidential and caring working relationship through which you can explore areas for growth and your existing resilience. My training and experience in multiple unique settings with a diverse client base has helped me to develop a strong belief in individuals’ power to bring sustainable change to their lives. I acknowledge the difficulty involved in taking the first steps toward initiating psychotherapy. Please reach out for individual or couple’s therapy consultation if you have general questions or would like to determine whether I would be a good fit to help you address your needs.

I view therapy as a space for you, the client to be unequivocally yourself while recognizing that there are so many internal and interpersonal factors alongside systems in place that may contribute to the pain, anxiety, and discomfort one feels. You are the most important person in your own life, and once you start to care for yourself in healing ways, this can be extended to others who you care for and love. I believe that it is important to walk patiently with every individual and I also believe that it is important to discuss how cultural beliefs and societal roles may influence one’s perception and experiences.

Life is difficult at times. Sometimes the difficulties are a result of our past choices affecting our current circumstances. Sometimes our struggles result from what someone's done to us. And other times it's just a result of living in a fallen world. Regardless, we were made to need the wisdom and help from others within our community of faith.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
