Dr. Karen Ferguson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in both Arizona and California with over 35 years of experience. She has worked with individuals of all ages and families who are coping with issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, parenting, low self-esteem, attachment issues, relationship issues, bipolar disorder, and abuse. She has significant experience working with those who have suffered child abuse and those who have lived through foster care. I offer counseling and talk therapy services; however, I do not currently offer psychological testing.

My ideal client is someone struggling with relationship issues, whether it’s a teenager, middle school person, or adult. Some examples are parents are going through a divorce, a teenager needing help with school or family interpersonal issues, family or friend relationship problems, and general anxiety or depression.

My ideal clients are those that have struggled with addictions, children of alcoholic parents or loved ones, trauma, anxiety, narcissist abuse, and relationship issues, and are motivated for change. Clients who feel stuck. By creating safety, structure, and consistency in the counseling environment, my clients are better able to ground themselves, creating a stable, regulated, incremental mindset. I’m here for that.

I have been a psychologist for 33-years, predominately in private practice settings. The focus of your initial visit will be to meet you and obtain an understanding of what you hope to accomplish during our time together. I believe strongly in the importance of establishing a respectful, trusting therapeutic relationship in order to facilitate your progress toward meeting your therapeutic goals. My approach to psychotherapy is goal-oriented, as the therapeutic process is collaborative rather than one-sided. My office is located in a newer section of North Peoria, on the dividing line of Sun City and Peoria.

Hey! I practice a person-centered approach. I offer a safe place for you to process your feelings and come up with your own solutions with a little guidance. My focus is on children, tweens, teens and young adults who reside in "Non Traditional" homes. I specialize in treating clients who are struggling with multiple addictions, mood regulation, trauma, behavioral, and relational issues. Many of my clients report struggling with trying to fill a void, feeling lost, or stuck. This may show up as some sort of unhealthy coping mechanism such as an addiction, unhealthy relationships, or a behavioral issue. Only temporary relief may be found until the true underlying issues are addressed. Together we can uncover what is underneath your struggles and address what we find. Facing underlying trauma while concurrently looking at the presenting issues is what I do

In Buddhist philosophy, "pain is inevitable, suffering is optional." The story of the Buddha and the two arrows explains this well – while the first arrow may cause physical or emotional pain, the second arrow is one’s reaction to it – the self-talk, the self-blame, and negative thoughts that amplify the pain. Counseling can help you put down the second arrow and transform your suffering into growth, learning and resilience.
