Do you ever feel like you are highly sensitive or have trouble sorting through all of your thoughts and emotions? Do you find yourself wondering why you have negative feelings and thoughts when everything in life seems to be okay? Are depression and anxiety showing up often in your life? Is it hard for you to relax or find peace of mind? Do you ever feel so uncomfortable in your body for no apparent reason? Sometimes our prior negative experiences can stick with us, even if we thought we were "over it."

My ideal client might struggle with depression, trauma, or anxiety. They will be goal-oriented and driven, willing to be vulnerable. Their goals would be to decrease feelings of depression or anxiety. I work with clients to identify past unresolved trauma, often an underlying issue contributing to one's current negative or dysfunctional behaviors and feelings. My goal is to help individuals work through their past trauma and learn new, effective ways to cope with their feelings, behaviors, and problematic thoughts in a compassionate environment.

Facing challenges is a natural part of life, but sometimes, situations can feel overwhelming. Feelings of hopelessness, self-doubt, anxiousness, and depression can seem out of our control. We may notice disruptive patterns and challenges in our relationships with ourselves and others but feel unsure of how to change them. Our past can haunt us, and we might wonder why we can't experience the happiness and hope others seem to have. Our present grief or fear of change can be debilitating. The truth is happiness and inner peace are achievable, yet we may require a little assistance to find our way. If you are struggling, I can help.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to help individuals address a wide spectrum of challenges, including but not limited to PTSD, anxiety, panic, grief, depression, self-esteem issues, adoption-related concerns, and complex family dynamics.
I firmly believe that we all possess the strength needed to overcome adversity and heal from the profound impact of trauma. The effects of complex trauma can cause us to feel emotionally unsafe, socially disconnected, and internally robbed of the ability to trust ourselves. This leaves many caught in a cycle of self-doubt and self-criticism, diminishing our capacity to cope with life’s challenges. My mission is to provide invaluable support to those seeking to understand and heal from past experiences, enabling them to enhance their self-image and overcome the emotional hurdles that trauma can create.

I engage clients in cognitive behavioral therapy by which we challenge negative thought patterns to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression.
I believe counseling to be a work of the human heart; healing work, life-giving work, work that heals the soul and repairs trauma, past pain, and brokenness. I am happy to accompany clients on their journeys to assist them in making changes in their lives that will enable them to reach their fullest potential and to find deeper fulfillment and joy. I am honored to accompany clients on the journey of uncovering & healing past pain by challenging beliefs that hold them back from whole-heartedly accepting themselves, loving themselves and from taking ownership for their thoughts and behaviors.

If you are struggling with emotional or physical pain from past trauma, relationship or family challenges, chronic anxiety or depression, self-doubt or self judgement, you will have a confidential, compassionate, safe environment to explore the areas causing pain or struggle and move into growth.
Trauma, fear, anxiety, shame, and self- limiting beliefs keep us stuck in old, self-protective patterns that no longer serve us. Treatment starts with exploring what you would want for yourself from doing this work. This desire guides the process. We identify and explore what gets in the way of what you want for yourself. Often times it is strategies we developed during childhood to navigate family relationships, emotions we shut down because they overwhelmed us, negative beliefs we have about ourselves, or ways we disconnect from intimate connection. The outcome leads to greater connection to yourself and with others.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
