Through my 15 years of being a foster/adopt parent, I have experienced how trauma, attachment, anxiety, learning disorders, Autism, ADHD, and mood disorders, affect daily functioning and the ability to enjoy life. I have come to appreciate how important it is to feel a sense of safety and belonging. We are biologically wired to need connections/relationships for optimal growth and development. However, negative life experiences, the inability to self-regulate our emotions, and or other mental health concerns, can negatively affect the way we interact with others, causing difficulties in building those positive relationships we need.

I also work with kids who struggle with ADHD symptoms and emotional-regulation problems.
I am a bilingual (Spanish) therapist who specializes in working with children and families. I offer both in-office and in-home counseling because I recognize that many kids feel more comfortable in their own home than in a therapist's office. Considering the fact that I will only be involved with a family for a relatively short period of time, I use a family systems approach to therapy and I teach parents how to become therapeutic to their children.

Every person has the right to live a life of purpose, free from the pain of past hurts. Unresolved trauma gets in the way of living a life that is unhindered by painful memories or negative, self-limiting beliefs.

Life is hectic, and at times, it can be downright brutal! However, our culture rewards those who "push through" regardless of their circumstances. Before long, you're five miles to empty. You have no energy, you're not sleeping well, you're irritable, depressed, anxious, and at times emotionally detached from everything and everyone. My ideal client is someone who is looking to slow down and drown out the noises stifling their inner voice. Mourning loss, cultivating self-acceptance, creating useful internal dialogue, and establishing boundaries are possible when we choose to stop running on fumes and allow ourselves to be still.

Are you a first responder? The demands of first responders are like no other, both physically and mentally. Your job is to run towards high-stress situations and support where you can. I was raised in a first responder home and am continually learning more about the mental health of those who serve. I am so thankful for first responders; counseling is one way that I would like to give back. I have also done extensive work in individual and couples therapy and have years of experience in the sports and performance world.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
