I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist trained in EMDR.
Are you a neurodivergent or highly sensitive person (HSP) who struggles with feeling overwhelmed and exhausted all the time? Does it feel like you get hijacked by your emotions and past trauma plays over and over in your mind? I get it. The world leads us to believe that if we struggle with intense emotions, overwhelm or letting go of the past, there must be something wrong with us. I’m here to tell you that nothing is wrong with you. You’re not broken, the way you feel is not your fault, and healing is possible. I’m Sera, and as a neurodivergent therapist with ADHD I understand the struggle.

I am also trained in EMDR and ART to address trauma issues.
I have been a counselor for 20+ years. I work with most substance and/or process addictions, my favorite work being with people dealing with compulsive sexual behavior. I have trained with Pia Mellody and embrace her work on Developmental Immaturity. I am in recovery myself, for 33 years, and enjoy helping others who want to overcome their addictive behaviors. I believe in the importance of treating the underlying childhood issues as well as building a 12-step based recovery. I help people free themselves from isolation and shame caused by addictive behaviors and reengage in their lives from a place of sobriety, peace and joy.

Are you tired of feeling like a prisoner of your past or current situation? The therapy relationship is a powerful experience that can provide healing in many ways; you don’t have to go through life’s trials alone. As humans, we share the common vulnerability of struggling with some form of suffering. Psychotherapy is a safe place for healing and moving through life challenges. I primarily use EMDR, self-compassion skills, and cognitive behavioral skills to assist my clients in the therapeutic process.

I often use the extensively researched CBT and EMDR approach as an effective treatment modality.
I welcome you and aim to make you feel at ease as I offer professional guidance using research-based interventions in a confidential, non-judgmental atmosphere. Whether you are seeking to improve interpersonal relationships, find greater fulfillment, overcome addictions, depression or anxiety, I can help guide you in the most effective personalized approach. We all experience situations in our lives when we may need professional support as we face obstacles that seem overwhelming or too daunting to overcome on our own. I believe no problem exists without both a solution and a potential positive outcome.

Positive outcomes and reaching goals is something I am known for! To accomplish this, I primarily use EMDR Therapy with clients and also pull from DBT, CBT, IFS and various behavioral and art therapies as needed.
Mental health issues are so hard. Great job taking the first step toward healing in looking for a therapist! It's important you can connect with your therapist, so here is a bit about me to get to know me better. As a therapist, I care about the individual needs of each person that come in to see me. I try to create a "come as you are" environment so you feel welcome and comfortable to share about your unique struggle and life issues. I prioritize practical coping skill learning alongside healing the root of the problem so you can simply feel better faster.

I work with clients using a holistic and integrative approach, including EMDR, CBT, mindfulness and other modalities.
My goal is to provide supportive, empowering counseling that enables clients to reach their fullest potential. I believe human potential is limitless, but we are often held back by our own self-limiting beliefs. Self-defeating narratives are often accompanied by anxiety, depression, addiction, low self-esteem, etc. I assist clients in examining any false narratives that may be holding them back, while also exploring new, more effective patterns of behavior. From this new vantage point, clients see from a place of greater clarity, and are better able to make clear decisions how they want to move forward.

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
