Most of my work involves working with depression, anxiety, trauma, losses, and life adaptations with early and late adolescents, adults, and couples. I have a strong experience working cross-culturally and including the family in the therapy if necessary. My approach is Existential-Humanistic with a strong Psychodynamic base. I may use cognitive therapy, and techniques such as EMDR, Play, Art, or IFS when necessary.

In my compassionate psychodynamic approach, I honor the importance of your unique cultural context and developmental upbringing, and how the many intersections between family, culture and identity interact.
What does thriving mean to you? Each of us are on a journey toward thriving. Sometimes we get interrupted along the way by anxiety, fear, rejection, anger, sadness, and resentment. When we feel uncertain or stuck we might experience disconnection, lack of purpose, and loss of meaning. In such times, therapy offers a safe place to be heard, a trusted person to unpack our stories with, and a method for traveling through the layers of life’s ups and downs. I believe strongly that this present moment is an avenue for creating growth and change, that’s why I deeply value the transformative potential of therapy.

You have taken the initiative and have begun the most difficult part of your journey. Your being here means you are contemplating change. No doubt, change can be hard, and yes, often uncomfortable. Good news, you do not have to go through it alone. You are the expert of your own experience and you get to set the pace for your journey. I engage a psychodynamic, person centered, strengths based, solution focused approach in working with my clients. My passion is working with the root causes of symptoms that trouble you. Anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, let's uncover what has prevented or is blocking your progress or goals.

Together with several colleagues, I founded the Southwest Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, the goal of which was to train psychodynamic therapists in the southwest part of the U.
My view of the psychoanalytic process encompasses the developmental nature of our life - of our present and past experiences. Through our communication, we work toward the discovery of one’s independence, creativity, and individuality - that is, becoming a person. The goal with children and with adolescents is to restore them to the path of normal development. A developmental approach is utilized in assessment and planning. The therapeutic time may include play, talk, and meeting with parents. Parental involvement is crucial to the outcome of the endeavor.

Finding yourself is a complex and ultimately rewarding journey affecting mind, body and soul. It requires listening to the sadness and confusion when life has become meaningless, depressing, anxiety ridden and overwhelming. Our potential lies in the unconscious with its knowledge. This can be revealed through the Jungian analytical approach aimed at the present distress as it opens to future development. There we discover unknown personality aspects, the limiting attitudes, complexes and patterns working no longer. Their transformation moves us into our more authentic self. From this comes joy, creativity and hope.

As a psychologist I have extensive experience in providing both brief counseling, long term in depth psychotherapy as well as marriage and relationship counseling. I know what anxiety and depression feel like. I know how difficult relationships can be. I know the pain you feel when you have been betrayed, especially when there has been an affair. I also know how emotionally difficult and alone people feel when going through a divorce. With any situation I will help you gain greater clarity as to what steps to take next. For those interested in wanting to forgive, I can help you learn how to forgive and support spiritual journeys.

Your well-being is the foundation that serves you in life and self-care can often fall to the bottom of the list. Although life may seem uneasy right now, addressing your own needs should not be seen as a selfish act, but rather a path to self-preservation. Reaching out for support is not always easy and getting the support you desire is the highest priority.

I am currently not taking on any new clients. I am a licensed clinical psychologist practicing in Scottsdale, Arizona. I specialize in treating adults with anxiety disorders (e.g., obsessive-compulsive, phobias, panic, trauma, social anxiety) and depression. I do psychotherapy the way I'd like to receive it; I use a Rogerian client-centered, empathetic stance with unconditional positive regard. I modify my approach depending on each individual's needs (e.g., CBT or more directive when requested by clients). I also treat impression management (e.g, acting like a "chameleon").

I am certified in EMDR, Brainspotting and Clinical Hypnotherapy, powerful mind-body therapies which facilitate healing at a deep/core level (not just symptom management). I integrate these modalities with talk therapies, however, results typically occur in much less time than traditional talk therapy alone.

I really enjoy working with marriage/family/parent-child relationships in a safe, non-judgmental way that opens up communication and eases tension/conflict. In therapy, I'm active, direct, integrative/creative, encouraging, and compassionate. I engage with you as a partner in identifying what works for you, acting on it, and following through. I enjoy coordinating treatment with other providers/helpers/support people. I'm skilled in working with gifted/talented individuals, soul-searching, and addiction/recovery. I have a passion for what I do, and I live it as a vocation/calling not just a job.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
