I am a therapist at Desert Horizons Therapy, and I'm passionate about working with adults facing a range of challenges, including substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, anger, and trauma. My background in outpatient services and community mental health has allowed me to engage with diverse populations, enriching my understanding of the complexities of mental health. I firmly believe that healing is not a linear process; everyone’s journey is unique, and therefore, everyone deserves a tailored approach to therapy.

My ideal client is ready to explore their thoughts and feelings, even if they're overwhelmed or unsure where to start. They may be dealing with stress, anxiety, or past trauma, but they're open to learning new ways to cope and grow.

I am a licensed psychologist and a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT). I have been working in the field of substance abuse for several years. When addiction occurs in families it can be a painful and devastating process. It is important for individuals who are struggling with addiction to receive help when they are ready. I can offer support and guidance during this time. I believe everyone has the potential to start the recovery process.

I am deeply aware of the profound effects that stress, anxiety, and unresolved trauma can have on every aspect of our lives. They can weigh heavily on our relationships, careers, families, and self-worth; leaving us feeling trapped and unable to move forward. I believe that fear and anxiety do not have to dictate our daily thoughts and actions. Through my work, I am passionate about guiding clients towards a path of healing. If you're ready to take that first step towards a brighter tomorrow.

Now Taking Medicare! We reach out for guidance and support because, as Humans, we rely on one another for problem-solving, caring and belonging. It's not healthy for us to try to manage our lives all by ourselves. Working together, we can begin to see obstacles that we can't see alone. Overcoming difficulties is how we learn and grow. Once removed, we are able to uncover deep meaning and purpose in our lives. We find joy. People all around the world and in all walks of life share a deep core fear; "Am I good enough?" And that begins our journey to being the incredible, unique individuals that we are!

We experience many things through out our lives that contribute to developing unhealthy coping skills. Some turn off their emotions, some seek substances and some develop debilitating anxiety. These coping skills start to feel safe and anything else becomes uncomfortable. These coping skills can lead to negative consequences that include prison time. I have experience working with people with a wide range of life experiences and backgrounds, including felons. Asking for help is the biggest step in healing. I can help you through the process of finding all the things you have been running from.

Day by day life teaches us something new about ourselves and how we adjust to the obstacles that emerge in front of us. Overall wellness is often a process, one in which we may have the desire to pursue but lack the skillset to achieve. I strive to come along side of you in your pursuit to invest in yourself and mental wellbeing. Engaging in counseling services is an excellent way to deepen your self-awareness, and explore what you truly are capable of accomplishing in your life.

My ideal client is someone who feels emotionally dysregulated, has lost their sense of identity, and no longer finds joy in activities they once enjoyed. They may feel lost or be experiencing a significant life transition. These individuals are seeking to reconnect with themselves, discover their purpose, and live a meaningful life. They are eager to experience healthy emotions and foster positive connections and relationships. They are open to new possibilities and are willing to explore what a different, fulfilling life could look like. These clients are committed to healing from their trauma and continuing on a growth journey.

The essence of my counseling approach is that I know each person to be whole and unique regardless of what is currently being experienced. I help clients focus on areas of difficulty with kind acceptance. Knots of anxiety, depression and unhappiness unravel and resolve into greater peace. One begins to know oneself as bigger than the problem. I teach cognitive behavioral skills of mindfulness, centering and focusing to allow a greater repertoire of responses to habitual problem areas. I provide a safe place to explore one's deeper self and resolve issues that block happiness and the realization of potential.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
