Attending California Institute of Integral Studies shaped my holistic approach to therapy: body, heart, mind and spirit. I use a systems approach when working with clients to see and understand how all areas of one’s life might be impacting them today. I have worked with hundreds of men and women over the last 20 years as a successful corporate leader in Human Resources and Organizational Development. In this “first career” I worked to create powerful change for teams in both their personal and professional lives.

My career in social services has given me the rare opportunity and privilege to accompany others throughout much of life’s journey--from the miracle of birth, as an adoption advocate to helping senior populations and their families as a counsellor managing long term care and end of life issues. One of the universal truths that I have learned is that struggle and adversity is an inescapable part of the human experience. Rather than let these challenges destroy you, my role is to help you on your journey to grow and work through the hardships of life and become the healthiest and happiest version of yourself.

Everyone at some point needs someone who will focus solely on them and their feelings. Someone who will listen without judgment. This is especially true when everyday tasks are overwhelming and exhausting. Taking a shower can be a monumental task. Things that used to be fun aren’t anymore. The thought of hanging out with family and friends means taking on the exhausting task of acting “normal”. Not being able to do these “simple” things can create a spiral of shame and guilt. And it doesn’t help when no one seems to get what you are experiencing and feeling.

Maya Angelou said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” I agree! Our stories are a part of who we are, and they shape our experiences. When we share our stories, we can heal from trauma, connect with others, and grow as individuals. I help individuals and couples explore the themes of attachment and connection in their stories, or lack thereof, which are essential to healing and growth. I use an attachment-focused lens to help you understand how your life experiences have shaped your current relationships and sense of self, so you can feel confident in your next chapter because you know the author.

Are you struggling with feeling "too much" or being called "too sensitive"? Do you feel like no one hears you or validates your feelings? Maybe you have experienced some intense things in your life and you are looking to feel safety again, within your own body and with other people.

Have you gone from living a full life to feeling yourself exhausted and lying awake every night, obsessively focused and out of control with food and eating, overwhelmed by stress, sidelined by chronic pain or a serious medical diagnosis. You have tried "cure" after "cure" and yet nothing has improved. Maybe you’re nervous about seeking help for your struggles.

Every day your efforts with each other lessen. Your once strong, committed, fun, loving connection has weakened. The knowing glances you used to share have been replaced with annoyance and aggravation. Coming home to each other used to be the best part of your day, now it's the loneliest. Your hearts are screaming out to be heard by one another. You wonder if it's even possible to get back to where you used to be, or if that place you're imagining ever existed at all. You wake up strangers; rarely talking through the day, certainly not in kind or healthy ways. Life together has become bills, obligations, and all the "have tos".

I view the client as a fellow traveler through life and look forward to taking this journey with you.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
