I tell clients that I am like GPS - I can't tell you where to go, but I can help you get where you decide you want to go! I love working with people! Everyone has traveled a different road to become the person who sits in front of me, and I am so drawn to the unique experiences that each person shares. I am so in awe and have so much respect for the lives of people who choose to work with me on a current rough spot in the road they are traveling. I feel so honored to be part of that journey for a time, and to assist with making the journey easier.

I believe the primary role of a therapist is to help clients gain a sense of hope. Life can be challenging, even in the best of times, and talking through your issues can help. I'll do my best to help you figure out the root causes causes of your problems so they don't keep popping up. My job is not to advise you or to tell you what to do. Many of us unknowingly repeat patterns that keep us stuck or can be harmful and interfere with living our best and most meaningful life. Addiction, anxiety, trauma, grief, depression, self-esteem and relationship issues cause our lives to become more difficult than planned or imagined. Learning how to identify and effectively address what gets in our way can seem overwhelming if we aren't equipped with the appropriate tools to deal with them. Increasing self-awareness can bring us to a state of congruence so what we feel on the inside more clearly matches what we express on the outside.

In 1991, I received a Master's degree in Social work and I've been providing mental health services ever since. In over 20 years of practice, I've realized that there is no treatment model that fits every situation, so I take an eclectic approach, tailoring treatment to fit each client. Some models I use are Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Family Systems Theory, Insight-Oriented Therapy, and Interpersonal Therapy.

My ideal client is someone who may be at a crossroads in their life, recognizing that they are struggling with issues they cannot manage themselves and ready and willing to make a change. They may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or lost, but beneath that, there is a desire for something better—a healthier and more meaningful life. Their needs often include a safe, non-judgmental space to express their feelings freely.

Hi, I'm Laura. I originally came into this field to aid others with substance use disorders because I am passionate about it; however, my practice expanded as I entered the field. I started out working in inpatient psychiatric with clients struggling with suicidal ideation, post suicide attempt, homicidal ideation, new or unmanaged psychosis, and alcohol and drug detox. Next, I worked in intensive outpatient for mental health and a residential alcohol and drug treatment center. I've been in private practice telehealth since 2022 and mostly serve those with depression, anxiety, and maintaining a sober lifestyle.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.
How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.
How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.
Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
