My specialty populations include adolescents, urban Native Americans and, for the past 15 years, military service and family members.
Hello and welcome to my profile. After many years in the corporate sector I changed careers, graduating from Tulane University in 1999, to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Helping others work through life challenges has been a goal of mine since high school. Since 2000, I have worked as a Clinical Social Worker in a variety of settings (high schools, agencies, private practice, the VA and military installations around the world) with people aged 13 - 75.

I also work with Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACoA) and others who may have a loved one struggling with a substance use disorder, with the understanding that this common challenge impacts the whole family system.
Seeking help is a courageous step forward, and it can begin a vital journey of recognition, goal setting, motivation, and action toward living the way you prefer. I completed MA in Counseling in 2003, with a focus on Family Systems. I'm licensed in Addiction Counseling and Certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and also trained in CBT and Motivational Interviewing. I've been in the Behavioral Health Field for 19 years.

Life can be challenging sometimes depending on the difficulties we confront. The impact in our general health can be threatened because of the stressors we got. Dysfunction occurs when someone is unable to find solutions to their problems because he/she is stuck and without options. Solutions must be sought creatively to solve problems. In a therapeutic approach focused on solutions, we construct together meanings with questions leading to different possibilities of resolution. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Phoenix in Puerto Rico with a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling.

By taking a family systems perspective, together we can process not only the impact family has had on your life but also how that has shaped your view of the world and those around you.
I have found that people are the most successful in their counseling journey when they are ready to work on what brings them in. While individuals may not be able to identify their specific goals, they are motivated for a change to occur. Motivation is what propels each person throughout the counseling process to achieve the goals that are established together.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
