I am a person-centered therapist with specialized training in perinatal mood disorders.
Do you have feelings of overwhelm on a daily basis? Do you often compare your ability to handle day to day stressors to friends and family and wonder how they seem to have it "all together"? If you think you could be experiencing symptoms of depression, ADHD, or anxiety- I am here to help. It can be challenging to cope with these feelings and and feeling out of control if we previously felt "fine". In times like these, counseling can help an individual process their experiences and find effective ways to cope.

Kim Kriesel is passionate about helping women and their partners to and through motherhood. No two women will experience the road to motherhood in the same way and sometimes becoming a mom is not the experience we had anticipated for most of our lives. For 1 in 11 women (couples), infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss are a devastating reality they never dreamed would touch their lives. Reaching out for support is a great choice during this difficult time.

Motivated by my own pregnancy and postpartum challenges, I became a therapist to fill the void I experienced in finding support.
My ideal client might be someone experiencing a major life transition, such as pregnancy or postpartum, or a teenager who is seeking support and validation. They may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or grief related to these experiences. Their needs include understanding, coping strategies, and a safe space to express their emotions. Their goal is to navigate these challenges with resilience and to feel empowered in their journey. Ultimately, they want to feel heard, understood, and supported as they navigate this transformative time in their lives.

Often when we imagine the process of pregnancy and having a baby, we picture moments of happiness and joy. But pregnancy, birth, and parenting are like the rest of life. There is often joy, but there can be tough times too. Sometimes pregnancy and postparttum depression, anxiety and self-doubt become overwhelming. The unexpected happens, things don't go as planned, relationships change, or grief and loss occurs. If you are having concerns about becoming pregnant, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, pregnancy loss, or being a new parent, you are not alone. Please know it's not your fault, you can get help, and you can feel better.

As we navigate pregnancy, birth, and parenthood, we are often challenged. Struggling with infertility. Feeling fearful as we prepare for our upcoming birth. Looking for a safe place to process birth trauma. Experiencing postpartum depression/anxiety. Difficulties adjusting to change. Seeking resolution about the past so we can be the kind of parents we want to be. Yearning to parent differently than we were raised, but not sure how. I will absolutely challenge you to do the work in these areas. And I will also be there to support you as you prioritize yourself and watch the rest of the pieces fall into place.

As your therapist, I will seek to understand you and your perspective and create space in which you feel safe to be vulnerable.

I can also assist you with weight loss, emotional eating, stress, pregnancy, and postpartum.
Whether you're struggling with an immediate stressor, long-standing problem, important decision, or seeking growth, I'm here to help. You've likely tried to manage your situation the best you could, and may have run out of ideas or energy. You might feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start. Past experiences and problems may seem to prevent you from living the life you desire. Feelings of hopelessness, fear, and uncertainty may have you questioning if it's possible to feel better or make a change. All of these experiences are a normal response to hardship and stress.

The story we often tell ourselves can be negative and self destructive. From there we create negative patterns in our behaviors, communication, relationships, and daily lives. We self-sabotage because the story we tell ourselves says, “we aren’t good enough.” I have a strong passion in helping individuals, families, and couples redefine their stories, rediscover their inner strengths, and find inner peace. When we are able to see our self worth and reconnect with our values, we are able to create more meaning in our daily lives and relationships, especially the relationship we have with ourselves.

Sometimes a difficult life transition, a series of changes happening one after the other can throw us off track and challenge the best of us. Or that feeling that you need to make a change in your life or your relationships is getting harder to ignore, because the same old band-aids are no longer working and the pain is not going away by itself. You are not sure how to go about it. Anxiety, depression, self-doubt creep in, and you feel stuck.

Motherhood is no joke! It can be lonely, scary, and overwhelming. One day leads to another and you’re exhausted, frustrated, and on edge. Scary thoughts never let up and leave you feeling like a bad mom. Everything is hard and no one seems to understand. People say annoying things like, "Enjoy every moment!" You wish you could enjoy life, but it's just not that easy. The loneliness, anger, resentment, and guilt make everything harder and you're in survival mode. You might feel like you've lost your sense of self and wonder if you will ever feel like "you" again. The answer is YES! You're not alone. I understand, and I can help.

“The definition of vulnerability is uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. But vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our most accurate measure of courage." -Brene Brown. Asking for help is vulnerable. Being willing to take a deeper look inside and do the work to make changes takes courage. You give your time, money, and effort, and it is worth every ounce of all it takes. Sometimes we need support to see what we can’t and learn new skills to help us grow. I have done that myself. I would love to help you do the same and support you in experiencing growth beyond what you might think possible.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
