I find art therapy to be a versatile tool to help manage an array of symptoms/distress in a way that does not always require speaking. If it is not time to talk about something, but you do want to overcome distress or begin to change your mindset, we can find ways to make art about it. Art can be a powerful tool capable of manifesting dreams and confronting nightmares. You don’t have to be a Picasso or experienced with art to benefit from art therapy. Sometimes, the process of art making can be enough. I have strong values in cultural competence and experience helping individuals manage anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD and more.
I find influence from a couple of different theories. Existential-humanistic theory considers the responsibility, freedom, and ability to accept consequences that are inherently part of the human experience. Solution-focused theory considers techniques that can be used in brief therapy that curate individualized goals and objectives.
From my perspective, the counseling process is always meant to be a holistic experience completely curated to helping the participant find ways to help themselves. Together we can explore avenues to address whatever is needed; improve time-management, increase motivation/empowerment, work through nightmare distress and more.
