Through working with a wide variety of individuals, I've learned and continue to learn daily how our life story is powerful. Not only is our life story powerful but knowing what part of your story is getting the most power is vital to the next chapter of our lives. We all have a story. Here at Open Book Wellness Center, our goal is to reach those that have a strong desire to turn the page, entering into their next chosen chapter. We strive to empower our clients to take control of their narrative and write and live a story that brings hope and growth. April

I am a Licensed Master Social Worker that enjoys meeting clients where they are at. Many of us have become disconnected from ourselves and others as a result of the hardships or traumas that we have experienced in life. I focus on helping others reconnect with themselves, growing in clarity, self-compassion, confidence, courage, calmness, and cultivating a more purposeful life. I strive to provide a safe environment, free of shame or judgement that allows my clients to feel comfortable and proud of showing up exactly as they are. Brené Brown says it well, “Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change

It is amazing how our hearts can be beating in our chests and yet we do not feel fully alive. Life, circumstances, relationships, and even our own hearts can seem to work against us in our quest to have meaningful and fulfilling lives. As a trained professional counselor practicing in Arkansas, Arizona, and Missouri, I have been equipped to work with individuals, couples, and families and I have a passion for seeing people live well and find their purpose. I hold a Specialist degree in Psychology and Counseling and a Doctorate in Psychology and Christian Counseling, utilizing professional theories with a faith-based foundation.

"When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves." Viktor E. Frankl If you find yourself asking why, you are not alone. The journey of life is hard and no matter how hard we try, sometimes we need the support of another on that same journey. My dream has always been to offer Christian-based therapy that does not feel like therapy but instead like hope and healing. I love people, I love to laugh, and I love to do things differently.

Life can become chaotic at times in which we sometimes feel we cannot reach out or find someone to connect with that streamlines our path to growth and healing. Mental health can be a challenge and I believe everyone deserves a good quality of life. I realize each person looks through their own unique lens. I take great pleasure in understanding each individual’s worldview, and together, assist them to recognize their strengths and specific needs. I want to give everyone the ability to enjoy a life of happiness they deserve.

Life and relationships are hard. We often try to manage it on our own, but sometimes it becomes too much to bear. Our thoughts become distorted and we enter into unhealthy cycles of behavior trying to survive. Making the decision to seek psychotherapy requires one to be both brave and vulnerable at the same time. Reaching out for help takes guts and I am always honored to be a part of someone's journey. You remain in control while I walk along side you as a trained listener who helps you to make sense of your experience and encourages you to make desired changes along the way. Don't remain stuck, keep moving forward.

Are you feeling stressed or frustrated? Maybe unsure of how to help your child or teen? With Play Therapy I am able to use a non-judgmental form of treatment to help with decreasing impulsive behavior. I can help your child develop the skills needed to improve communication and listening skills. While teaching you how to discipline without “Losing Your Cool” Play Therapy proves to help with improving communication skills to prevent yelling, screaming, and tantrums. Wearing a fake smile and pretending everything is okay has become too much. How did it get to this point where life is so heavy and pointless? It just gradually happened, a little at a time. That one day at at time thing can work backwards too. Life can just get a little more impossible one day at a time also. The idea of reaching out to someone for help also seems impossibly heavy and difficult. But really it's not, it's just a call and the journey begins. A sense of hope can actually begin to be part of your emotional landscape. Our therapy can be the turning point where life begins to be lighter.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
