I use my training in Somatic Experiencing to assist clients with befriending their nervous system, helping it to discharge the stressful energy stored there that tends to keep people stuck in negative cycles.
As a therapist, I focus on facilitating a space of comfort and safety for individuals facing marginalization, oppression, racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, religious trauma, and attachment related issues. Trauma can result from many different lived experiences though commonly misunderstood as solely a result of war, violence, accidents, etc. It can show up in your life in various ways such as anxiety, perfectionism, people pleasing, feeling stuck/unmotivated, dissociation, shame, relational issues, etc. It can be overwhelming and exhausting to feel like you’ve tried so hard to heal and still feel like something is missing.

I use somatic and experiential approaches rooted in evidence-based practice.
Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. I collaborate with clients so they can engage in self-exploration and practice skills grounded in their personal values. As a queer nonbinary, fat therapist, I believe in addressing intersecting identities and building a compassionate relationship that centers the client's distinct needs. I specialize in relationship and sex therapy and especially enjoy working with individuals, couples, and polycules navigating changes in identity and sexual health. I have experience working with the impact of medical trauma and chronic illness on sexuality and with exploration of sexual and gender identity.

I use a trauma-informed, somatic approach to help individuals move past previous traumas or hurts and feel safe in their own body again.
I work with individuals who have experienced relational trauma and dysfunctional family systems. These experiences can range from emotional neglect in childhood to domestic abuse in a relationship. Often, individuals with these experiences struggle with asking for what they want, sharing how they are feeling, and saying no. They may find themselves doing anything they can to escape the present moment, whether that be chronic busyness or binging your favorite TV show. They struggle with maintaining healthy relationships, either from attaching too quickly or not attaching at all. Sometimes, their relationship just doesn't feel right.

I offer effective modalities including EMDR, Brainspotting, and somatic techniques.
Having been around the world, I know two things to be true: human suffering knows no culture or class, and the need for connection is universal. We are not meant to do life alone, and times of struggle can be such painful illustrations of that. By the time you seek out therapy, you have probably been at this for some time, white-knuckling the steering wheel of life, and adapting in the only ways you know. When you doubt your strength, know the courage it took to get here is not lost on me.

I have extensive training and experience working with children, adolescents and adults. My background has allowed me to work with a diverse range of needs, but traumatic stress is my primary focus. When working with children, I implement a child-centered and family-focused approach to help the child heal but also to support caregivers and to help the family grow closer together through the healing process. I also enjoy working with couples who want to learn together and grow closer. I am affirmative of LGBTQ and cultural minority clients. I fully embrace the opportunity to contribute towards societal change that is long overdue.

“Owning our story & loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing we will ever do.” This quote by Brene Brown sums up my deepest belief about the therapy process. I love to provide a safe & authentic environment in which I can walk alongside you as you learn to do both– own your story & through it, love yourself. My approach is warm, direct, & involves some humor (because laughing usually helps!)

We go to a medical doctor when we are ill and to the dentist when we have a toothache, as well as regular check-ups when we are not ill or in pain. So why not see a mental health professional when life becomes stressful or when faced with a problem? Why not go in for a regular checkup as well? We go through several stages in life, such as marriage, parenthood, and retirement. We are faced with new obstacles at each stage. As a mental health professional, I can assist you in navigating these new stages and obstacles.

My ideal client would be a client who comes to session ready to be vulnerable to openly discuss the issues they are dealing with, process them, and then be motivated to learn coping skills. I have mainly practiced working with children who have endured child maltreatment. I have Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Training and able to provide a safe environment to help children in their healing process by teaching them coping skills to help guide them towards seeing the light at the end of the tunnel again.

Sometimes looking in the mirror is hard when the image looking back at you is not what you pictured. Our past hurts and traumas, broken relationships, unhealthy relationship with food, and painful relationship with our bodies leave us broken and weary. I believe that digging into those painful places brings healing, as well as learning how to move into the present.

At some point in life, we all experience loss and hurt. Sometimes it’s too hard to talk about. And most of the time you don’t know what to do with all of it. Whether you’re grieving the death of a loved one, a relationship, or just feel stuck – it can be hard to move forward. You may have things from the past that feel like they still have power over you. You may become confused, sad, angry, or just overwhelmed by life – not sure how to move forward.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
