My ideal client is someone who is willing and ready to make an active change in their life. As a creative and expressive therapist I work well with clients that are willing to utilize artistic strategies, view things from many perspectives, and use out of the box thinking. Those who wish to have a collaborative, warm, and empathetic therapeutic relationship are a great fit. I tend to work well with clients who struggle with things such as depression, anxiety, burn-out, women’s issues, LGBTQ+ issues, adjustment issues, or interpersonal issues and are prepared to collaboratively design specific and time-oriented goals.

“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” This quote holds as a foundation and guide for my therapeutic approach. I understand that life experiences are not always in our control and I strive to help those that have experienced moments that left them feeling empty, hopeless, and less than what they truly are. I aspire to help those realize that the past does not have to define the future. We are not our trauma. We are not our past. We are who we choose to become.

Making the decision to go to counseling, or even wondering if you need counseling, can leave you feeling vulnerable and scared. Sometimes life’s challenges can be overwhelming or too much to navigate alone. Often, things happen that we have no control over, and sometimes we find ourselves in situations due to choices we've made. These instances can cause us to experience depression, anxiety, negative thinking patterns, grief, relationship issues, family difficulties. I can help you navigate these life stressors in a safe, sensitive and compassionate environment.

Going through traumatic experiences can have a serious impact on one's life. The consequences of trauma can lead to poor functioning & disruption in daily routines, relationships, work, & overall sense of wellbeing. It can lead to difficulties in regulating emotions & coping with stress. Additionally, trauma can impact a person's beliefs about themselves, others, and the world - leading to feelings of blame, shame, guilt, & a loss of trust. Overall, trauma can significantly impair an individual's ability to feel safe, connected, & in control of their life. Does this sound familiar to you? If so, I am here to help & support you.

You put on a good face every day. You pride yourself on working hard and doing your best but never feel quite good enough. You strive for perfection and achievement but there's always more to be done. You play many roles and fear that you aren't doing your best in all of them. Maybe you are a high achiever but have never felt valued by those around you no matter how wonderful you have done. Maybe you want a family but have struggled with infertility or loss. Fear of never being enough makes you feel out of control.

So you’re not feeling like your best self lately. Maybe you have never felt like your best self. You’re fighting voices inside your head that say, “I’m not enough.” You look in the mirror and you don’t recognize who you are; where things got lost, or too busy, or maybe even just stood still. Some days you are sad. Other days you are irritable. The days you aren’t sad or irritable you are biting your nails down to the quick. Maybe you have lost track of the days. “When was the last time I showered?” “Who can I reach out to that would care or understand what I’m going through?” “I just want the old me back… or maybe a new me.”

Wearing a fake smile and pretending everything is okay has become too much. How did it get to this point where life is so heavy and pointless? It just gradually happened, a little at a time. That one day at at time thing can work backwards too. Life can just get a little more impossible one day at a time also. The idea of reaching out to someone for help also seems impossibly heavy and difficult. But really it's not, it's just a call and the journey begins. A sense of hope can actually begin to be part of your emotional landscape. Our therapy can be the turning point where life begins to be lighter.

My name is Lauren Garrett, and I have been providing therapy since 2018. Before becoming a licensed therapist, I obtained a master’s degree in social work from NYU and NYU Shanghai, and received training at The New School University in New York City. Following graduate school, I spent a year and a half learning from neuropsychologists about Neurofeedback therapy. I have provided therapy in university, residential, private practice, and medical settings. At the core of my therapeutic approach is psychodynamic therapy, which recognizes the profound impact our past experiences have on our present thoughts and behaviors.

Life is messy at times. I have personal experience with ADHD, anxiety, trauma, depression, blended families, and recovery - I have been in your shoes! These experiences have been my inspiration to be in the helping profession. Therapy may feel risky. Being vulnerable with someone you don't know can feel intimidating. I hope you will take this step as a gift to yourself.

Life is full of unpredictable ups and downs and in this fast-paced world, peace can be hard to find. Often, our mindset shifts to the worst before considering that something good can happen, especially when there is a history of trauma. Working to assist people in identifying self-limiting beliefs, unwanted thoughts, and behaviors. We will focus to identify the origin of the problem/self-limiting beliefs and work to replace those with healthier views.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
