In working with individuals for over 15 years in a variety of settings, I’ve seen the impact that relationships and communication with others can have on individual well-being. When internalized, our lived experiences can manifest as anxiety, depression, self doubt and low self-esteem. Repeated thoughts and behaviors can be exhausting especially once we realize they’re no longer working for us. The good news is change is possible! I focus on the relationship between mind and body through thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to help clients achieve the peace of mind they're looking for.

"We don't have to do it alone, we were never meant to". When things are the hardest it can feel like the most difficult to reach out to others. I look to help individuals who are struggling to live the life they want to be living. My goal is to help my clients build authentic lives based on what matters most to them. Sometimes we move away from things that make us anxious or uncomfortable, rather than towards what brings us happiness. I look to help individuals really look at what’s most important to them in life and to examine whether what they want versus what they are doing are aligned.

My specialties include working with clients with anxiety disorders, trauma and PTSD, and chronic illness/disabilities.
Therapy is a major undertaking. It is a fantastic tool to use to feel better, and it takes a lot to utilize that tool. I am here to work with the clients who are ready to take on therapy with me, and those who are ambivalent about it. I will always meet clients where they are in life and this therapy journey. We can work together to discuss and process ongoing and past concerns.

Is communication with your child/teen, partner, or with other family members a struggle? Are you having difficulty coping with life's challenges? Do you feel anxious, angry or depressed? We all experience a range of emotions but at times we may become overwhelmed with these emotions to the point that we feel stuck. Counseling can provide the support that is sometimes necessary, while assisting you to navigate life's challenges. I believe that each individual's experience is unique and that by providing a safe, accepting and nonjudgemental environment the process of healing, change and personal growth can occur.

You wake up anxious. You’re unfulfilled! You try and push through the day, but you’re paralyzed by negative self-talk. “This is a waste of time,” rings in your ears. You continue to put everyone and everything else first. “Why?” you ask. Each day you wonder, “Will I ever be happy? Will I ever have the relationship I want?” Your inner voice harshly reminds you, “Those things are not for you. This is all you’ll ever get.” You’ve played it ‘safe’ all your life, but now you’re worried that you’re running out of time. You know you’re capable of more if you could only get past your own worst enemy – You. website: erinruelltherapy.com

In addition, I have extensive training in the areas of autism spectrum disorder, depression, anxiety, giftedness, and ADHD.
My goal as a clinician is to help you learn the strategies and techniques you need to cope with whatever brings you to my office. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all method, but rather try to tailor my methods to my clients' needs. Primarily, I work with adolescents, parents, and couples, as well as adults on an individual basis. I try to be both practical and understanding in my approach to treatment.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
