When it comes to psychotherapy, Nadia Sherman's, LPC, approach has always been integrative and holistic, meaning that she draws on theory and interventions from many different schools of thought in order to most effectively address your concerns. She most commonly draws upon an eclectic approach of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), choice theory/reality therapy, existential, and interpersonal models of treatment. Broadly speaking, CBT is a type of intervention that helps patients understand the thoughts & feelings that influence behaviors.

Having to be strong, tough, and on all the time can be draining. Compound all of that with having to do it while hiding your emotions can be doubly stressful. Black men are raised to be resilient and silent, to take what life throws at you without complaining “Just Man Up!”. Being raised to be strong was the message. Weakness is not to be shown or felt. Now when you’re upset or overwhelmed you have nowhere to turn for help.

I have been a therapist for over 35 years and believe that both individuals and couples can heal from dysfunctional relationships. "Know thyself" is a way in which to learn to cope with stressors that come your way. Understanding the baggage you carry, (we all have baggage), identifying our knee jerk reactions to other people, (rage, anger, fear, withdrawal) allows us to stop REACTING and teaches us to say how we feel in a healthy way. Addictions are our number one killer, and being fearful of expressing how you feel creates co-dependent relationships where much energy is focused on pleasing.

Life can feel challenging, overwhelming and perplexing! Do you just want the fog in your mind to clear? Was the previous year more than you can handle? If you find yourself lost in transition, existing but not living, seeking clarity, direction, or purpose, and just feel like breaking while trying to hold it all together? You’re in the right place. Change can be difficult, painful and messy but there is a beautiful story that you get to write if you go through the process. Allow me to journey with you as we work to un-complicate things. I provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for you to un-pack what's been weighing you down.

The school year has barely begun and you are already feeling signs of anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout on the horizon. Your to-do list is so long that you feel as though it will never get done and you are already two days behind this week (and it’s only Monday!). You are sacrificing time with your family, friends, and yourself to make sure that your classroom and lessons are Insta-worthy. As a former teacher, I understand feeling overwhelmed, underappreciated, and alone. I can help you work through the “labyrinth” of teaching. You are not alone, and you can be successful without sacrificing your sanity, or your relationships.

Ideal clients are people who realize they are struggling. They work up the courage to seek help even if it is scary or uncomfortable. People can have a wide range of issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, or trauma. The list is endless! Regardless of the issues, everyone in counseling deserves to be in a safe, respectful, and supportive environment while they work through whatever is keeping them from living their best life. These clients want to feel better, live better, and cultivate personal growth. The underlying hope when choosing to seek counseling is to progress beyond the pain and celebrate the ability to overcome.

We all struggle with the ups and downs of life. My passion is working with children (ages 3 and older) and families to promote healthy and happy individuals and relationships. I hope to help my clients enhance their own individual strengths, better their relationships with others, and enjoy the most out of everyday interactions and experiences. Solution Focused and Attachment-Based therapy are the primary approaches I utilize in treating clients. As human beings, I believe we are wired to connect with others and that individual change and healing influences relational change and healing.

Recognizing your strengths, even if you haven't seen them for a while or have never acknowledged them, is important in overcoming any problem you are facing. It is my job and my pleasure to help you identify your strengths and gain life-long strategies for happier living. People often become more hopeful and find that the therapeutic process is very helpful. I use humor where we can because therapy should not feel like a chore. It is your opportunity to have a mentor walk with you through a difficult time while providing support, techniques and guidance to help you create the life you envision.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in The Woodlands?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
