Most people, at one time or another, need the help of a therapist. It can be one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, past trauma, depression, anger, phobias, grief or are having difficulty in relationships. We often are responding to life and the people around us with outdated maladaptive coping strategies. I will help you develop self awareness and emotional regulation skills so that instead of being hijacked by your emotions you are empowered to react in healthy, positive ways. I provide my clients with a tool box of techniques that they can use to support them between our sessions.

My specialties in Synergetic Play Therapy, Hand in Hand Parenting, mindfulness, and relational neuroscience allow me to offer tools and a framework that supports kiddos, parents, and adults in understanding their natural states of stress/arousal so they can care for themselves and others in the midst of fear, overwhelm, hopelessness, helplessness and anger.
Thanks for checking in with yourself and for tending to those places in your heart and life that are feeling tender, vulnerable, or unmanageable. Maybe it feels like depression or anxiety is running your life right now, or relationships are unsatisfying or parenting has become an overwhelming and confusing chore, or maybe it's your kiddo who is struggling and you can tell something isn't feeling good for them. I trust that being together with a skillful someone is what allows for confidence and clarity to emerge even in the midst of challenges, and I would love to see if I'm a good fit.

I work with people who seek to find happiness and inner growth. I help clients work with, rather than against, anxiety, depression, anger, grief, limiting beliefs, habitual thought and behavioral patterns, and existential despair. Through the therapeutic relationship, we come to better understand how we wish to relate to everyone - family, lovers, friends, colleagues, strangers. While therapy can be challenging, and may put us in contact with potentially frightening or unpleasant emotions, we will also have fun and laugh along the way at the beautiful absurdity of being human, all too human.

There are several areas with which I have experience: anxiety & panic, depression, struggling to regulate emotions ( anger outbursts, overthinking, paranoia, impulsivity), navigating relationships (romantic and platonic), complex trauma (sexual, physical, job related, childhood, relational), military/firefighters/police, staying sober, & more.
Reaching out for help is overwhelming. Not knowing if you’re going to find someone who fits what you need. Not knowing what the therapy process is like. Not knowing what to say or do... or even how long this journey will take. I get it. It can be overwhelming and takes a lot just to make a phone call. But rest assured that I am here to help guide you through the process, help you get through the pain, and out on the other side.

This life can be painful. The way out is journeying within. While our deep potential is to live from an empowered, compassionate presence-anxiety and depression can obscure our essential nature. We are not immune from loss, change and uncertainty. Yet, with trauma, unmet emotional needs and messages from our culture-we can become overwhelmed with anger, shame and despair. We may try to alleviate our pain with compulsive, distracting or addictive behaviors that may ultimately limit our capacity to connect with ourselves and others. Our suffering intensifies when we feel alone in it, with an inner critic who blames us for hurting.

"I have not met a more wholehearted counselor than Dr. Horowitz in 40 years of working with so many," wrote author Stephen Levine. Your courageous reach for help is the first, hardest step. I have been through a number of disasters, incl. 2 large fires, 1 earthquake, deaths & my sister's psych hospitalization, & that's helping me to help folks adjust to CVIDS-19. Whether you are suffering from anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or pain, you can be helped via research-based tools. We'll first revisit your positive attributes: your accomplishments, talents, & passions are fuel for growth & change. We humans can re-learn, thankfully.

All of us have been hurt and humiliated, and some of us have suffered real trauma, neglect or abuse. We try to bury these experiences, and in order to live we develop ways to protect ourselves that typically involve blame, withdrawal, anger, drugs, manipulation and more. The therapeutic answer involves first resolving thoughts, feelings and behaviors born of actual or perceived past experiences, and secondly discovering an inner core of strength. Psychotherapy facilitates a sense of greater confidence and compassion, and fosters new awareness of connection and belonging. My interest and skill is in being useful to you in this process.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
