At times life can be unusually painful, scary and confusing. With the COVID-19 virus we are living through such a time. Generally speaking, we may feel anxious, sad, discouraged and alone, and not know what to do. When someone listens to us carefully, we learn how to listen to ourselves, to our own inner life. Talking things out with someone in this special way can help us become clearer about who we are, our strengths and also our self-defeating ways, so we can move forward with an improved sense of self and direction.
I see individuals from late teens through middle age and beyond. I treat people with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions and loss. I am very familiar with concerns of a college community (professional/academic stress, identity, midlife and self-esteem challenges, competitive feelings) given the number of schools in greater New Haven.
Different people need different things from therapy. Some request advice and suggestions for short term concerns; others ask for the time it takes to come to grips with more deeply entrenched issues. My training as a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst using cognitive-behavioral techniques as needed has prepared me to assist individuals across this spectrum.
