Feeling stuck? I base much of my approach on the idea that we are not programmed to be our own best friends, and that gets in the way. Our minds' default settings are not usually set up for us to feel extra self-confident, extra self-compassionate, or extra calm when the storms roll in. Life generally doesn't let us off the hook very easily, but if we can learn to look at things in new ways, we can find peace in knowing that we are doing the best we can with what life has dealt us.

Mental health difficulties often arise in the context of an absence of close interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and severe, persistent mental illness can be successfully treated through improvements in one’s capacity to develop and maintain adaptive, healthy interpersonal connections and engagement in meaningful and enjoyable activities. I have more than 36 years practicing clinical psychology. I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs on May 31, 2022 and I'm now expanding my private practice. Flexible schedule. I'm available for both teletherapy and in-office session. Lots of free parking.

Therapy offers the opportunity to develop ways of responding more authentically and effectively to life’s challenges. I recognize that seeking therapy is in itself a sign of strength and courage, as it can seem easier to try to ignore difficult and repetitive thoughts, emotions, or experiences. I aim to create a warm and supportive space for self-exploration, helping to bring old, unconscious patterns to light and thus begin loosening the hold of self limiting beliefs. In spite of all we cannot control, in learning to relate to our experiences in new ways we can become more grounded and compassionate with ourselves and others.

My goal is to help you live and act with integrity, increasing ability to respond - while maintaining compassion for the changes that take support, time & practice. My experience lends itself to those touched by abandonment, childhood traumas & addiction - be it those trying to recover from addictions themselves, or those affected by another's. I do not believe in 'fixing' people, but rather dismantling the myths of being broken. Experience shows that our greatest challenges are often unsprouted seeds to the most potent strengths. Our task is to usher that growth.

My interest is in mid-to-later life adults (40+) with a focus on the ways in which identity evolves as we age. I use a diverse approach comprised of behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, identity theory, and personal narrative modalities to address identity issues in the face of change across the lifespan such as health-related change, environmental or cultural shifts, personal loss, or traumatic events—experiences that can impact the ways in which we perceive ourselves. When the balance of our lives is challenged, the resulting stress can be difficult to manage.

The reasons people seek therapy are as diverse as the people themselves. I offer therapy to adults with a focus on helping them work on specific change as well as self-acceptance. Depending on people’s needs, I offer this help in the form of support, information, guidance, self-knowledge or the space to learn and practice new skills.

As Pema Chodron writes: "things are always in transition, if we could only realize it." Life's fluctuations are not easy, but I believe acceptance and self-kindness are essential to growth. Our ebbs and flows make things like our self-esteem hard to stabilize, but therapy can give us a truer evaluation of our worth.

I’m a psychotherapist, passionate explorer, and lifelong learner committed to guiding individuals toward wholeness. In my practice, I blend experiential therapy with a deep reverence for the sacred and unseen realms of consciousness, creating a space where science, spirituality, and the wisdom of the natural world converge. I’m attuned to the intersections of ecology, neurobiology, and the spirit—an approach informed by my studies in Integral Transpersonal Psychology. Whether you’re struggling with past trauma, navigating addiction, or searching for a renewed sense of purpose, I invite you to join me in this space of possibility.

I am driven by this work’s constant proof that when a person understands themselves better, they begin to live a better life. I am rooted in mindfulness, western psychotherapy, embodiment, and spiritual constellations as my foundation for support and I am comfortable with using a myriad of techniques and lineages to help a person navigate their inner world to change their outer reality.

My client is the expert on my client and my job is to help unlock their innate wisdom. Our troubles are the side effects of adaptations forged by hardship, and we can change them using strengths in ourselves, families and community. Feeling more connected to others involves communication skills, and tolerance for irritation and vulnerability (inevitable in close relationships). Therapy can help you hold your pain differently. You can feel better living with your past, instead of waiting to get rid of it. I help clients to address spiritual roadblocks and to help build a fulfilling and meaningful life, with the pain.

Good therapy will help you master the problems you are struggling with. People are strongly motivated to feel better and need a therapist who will align with them. Most people suffer from false self-blame. My clients tend to be people who find themselves compelled to put the needs of others ahead of their own. Self-criticism comes in a variety of painful and self-defeating habits, and thoughts and feelings often add to their burdens. I have committed my practice to helping patients overcome their guilt, shame & anxiety.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
