I have solid clinical training in both cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic methods, allowing me to tailor my therapeutic approach to a client's specific presenting problem and treatment goals.
Life inevitably will present challenges and along with them, opportunities for personal growth. As a therapist, I assist individuals in locating their internal compass, so that they can better navigate through life's obstacles. I provide a warm, supportive, and nonjudgemental environment, where I work collaboratively with the client to discover their strengths, along with what may be holding them back from achieving their full emotional and interpersonal potential. Through this therapeutic process, clients can gain insight and move forward in new and more fulfilling ways.

Welcome. Thank you for taking the time to check out Welcome Home Wellness - where my primary focus is on you. I believe it is a privilege to help people feeling confused, frustrated, anxious, depressed, or lost in life. I do not take the level of trust and vulnerability it takes to allow someone into your personal life for granted. Creating a safe, compassionate, non-judgmental, and nurturing space where you can heal and grow is what I hope to achieve together. It takes strength and courage to ask for help, and I find it an honor to offer support or a referral to help you navigate your way.

Have you been told you have PTSD? Or, do you have anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or negative self-talk that all started with a traumatic event(s)? If so, you have come to the right place. People with trauma often find themselves spending countless hours in therapy but not getting lasting relief. That is because not every therapist is specially trained to treat trauma, and not every therapy intervention is able to access the part of the brain where traumatic memories live.

I am a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine, where I also serve as the Director of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Training Program.
Individuals are often unaware of the many factors that determine their emotions and behavior. My approach fosters self awareness. By better understanding their perceptions about themselves and others, as well as how important experiences have influenced them, clients can change the way they see themselves and the world. They can make informed choices about the way they conduct their present and future lives. My approach is especially suited to getting to the root of long term problems and patterns. Connecting your subconscious with your conscious is essential in the psychodynamic approach.
Traumatic events or issues with family, relationship and work can lead to depression, chronic anxiety, grief and PTSD. Resultantly, the quality of life deteriorates. Psychotherapy (counseling) enables you to explore your cognitive and emotional sides. It involves connecting your past wounds and present emotions. Psychodynamic therapy enables you to go beyond managing your present emotions and go to the source. I have explored and had many diversified experiences in Spirituality which is important in terms of your present and past experiences. My holistic orientation includes heed to nutrition in all matters related to the MIND-BODY-SPIRIT connection.

Psychodynamic and attachment theories inform the bulk of my therapeutic work.
We all face difficult experiences that can seem unmanageable. You may be struggling with anxiety or depression or with old or new trauma. Perhaps your closest relationships have become a source of stress instead of a source of comfort. Maybe you are experiencing grief and loss. Going through these experiences results in a decline in your general well-being and happiness. My approach offers an in-depth understanding of your struggles to make long lasting changes in your life and relationships.

With a person-centered, psychodynamic approach, we’ll focus on both the present and hard pieces of your past.
Do anxiety and depression rule your life? Do you believe you’ll always have days where getting out of bed seems impossible? Does living authentically in your sexual identity seem terrifying? Are your relationships sometimes fueled by misunderstandings? Living free of these fears and frustrations is actually possible. Having someone understand is possible. I can help you get there.

Emotional pain can leave us feeling anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed but I have great news! There is a path, a way out, for you to heal and experience peace and joy. You do not have to suffer anymore, white-knuckling it through most days, feeling hopeless and too broken to heal while wondering if your life will ever be fulfilling. I understand the dark nights of despair and how hard it is to reach out. So, I find you to be courageous, right here and now – taking a step to figure out if I can help. And the answer is ‘absolutely!’

Have you been nervous or reluctant to go to therapy? Not sure if you "need it?" If you have a desire to connect more deeply with yourself or others, then therapy might be for you (note: I believe we can all benefit from talking with someone). If you want to overcome past trauma(s), are struggling with addictions, have difficulty regulating emotions, have codependency issues, or have been involved with the criminal justice system (both as law enforcement or as an incarcerated person), this is where you can begin your journey of understanding, forgiving, and connecting with yourself and others in a more meaningful way.

Counseling is much more than problem solving. It's an opportunity to acknowledge your strengths and build on them to help prepare for life's challenges, big and small. I believe that first and foremost, successful counseling is built on trust and connection. Many people who struggle are reluctant to reach out. If you are seeking help you've taken an important first step.

I work with people who are seeking relief from unhelpful thoughts, behaviors, or feelings that are disrupting their life and can lead to over-functioning on a daily basis to compensate. This over-compensating can leave you feeling anxious, empty, hopeless, and disconnected from yourself and others. If you would like to reclaim your energy and sense of control within, I can help.

Experiencing pain that leads you to seek counseling can be a valuable gift. By identifying and working through unsettling memories that cause mental distress, you can open up infinite possibilities and transition from a narrative of separation, which can feel like rigidity and chaos, to a narrative of integration, which can be experienced as the quietude of the heart.

I believe that from the day we are born, to the day we die, we come to know ourselves in and through our most intimate relationships. Hopefully these relationships are life giving, whether they are with our parents, our siblings or our significant partners. However, when we have to struggle to find support and comfort from our loved ones, life can become frustrating and hopeless. As a Marriage and Family Therapist, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and a Certified PBSP Certified Therapist, I am trained to offer my clients the most comprehensive counseling practice available to help them improve their most intimate relationships.

Good therapy works. But often, there are barriers between you and "good therapy"—barriers like finding a therapist that truly fits, the courage it takes to look at your life with honesty, and the effort it takes to grow and change. I'm a Psychologist who works with adults and couples, and I've had the privilege of helping people break through these barriers. I've taught university courses on counseling, worked with a diverse range of clients, and now, as a scientist at a digital health company, I focus on understanding what makes therapy effective. And through it all, one truth remains: good therapy works.

I think of a therapist as a wise guide who enters into the life of another human at a time of crisis and provides a compassionate, safe environment in which a person can experience himself more fully - explore, identify, and take initiatives to lessen the causes of her distress. The ideal therapist is one who, above all else, is an advocate for the freedom and well-being of another. The therapist, like spiritual guides of old, offers a balance of acceptance and challenge in helping the person become her best self. By challenge, I mean holding an individual accountable to himself and his potential for purposeful, dynamic living.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
