Are you wanting some help for your child - and maybe for yourself as well? Although I also work with adults, my specialty is working with children and adolescents who have experienced trauma and anxiety. Everyone can make progress with the right amount of support, guidance, and encouragement. I help children and adults recognize their strengths, make better decisions, and develop healthy relationships with others. "Balance is not something you find, it's something you create." (Jana Kingsford)

I use a variety of treatment modalities including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, & Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).
Seeking counseling is a very personal decision. Finding the right provider can be the most important step in the healing process. I believe I have helped so many clients because I use an array of tools and methods which I tailor to a client's unique goals. My approach is to work hard to understand a client's perspective and values. Sometimes this means helping the client explore and discover what that is for themselves. I lead AND follow - I may prompt, encourage, and confront, but I follow a client's pace (willingness and readiness) to delve into the issues.

Using a combination of therapeutic techniques including CBT, DBT, and Narrative Therapy I take a person-centered approach to assist my clients.
I spent the last five years working with various individuals who presented with primarily substance abuse issues. However, issues of depression, anxiety, sexuality, communication, and family dynamics were underneath the presenting problem as well. Since stepping into private practice I have worked with teens, parents, and couples of all ages and sexualities/gender identities. My clients all sought one thing: a different story than the one they had been currently starring in. Together we laid the groundwork to start changing that story. And together you and I can do the same.

My techniques are solution-focused, person-centered, and informed by the concepts of DBT.
I provide individual counseling services to all over the age of 12. When I have a teenager under age 14, I work with parents also in separate sessions. As a former teacher, I have insights about navigating the world of school. I also welcome adults dealing with codependency, grief and issues stemming from growing up in a dysfunctional home. Furthermore, I have experience with recovery from substance abuse, and would welcome anyone in IOP or sober living situations.

I integrate Motivational Interviewing (MI) with a variety of behavioral therapies such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT).
I am equipped to work with individuals who may have personality disorders, suicidal ideation, depression, and/or self-harm. However, I operate from the perspective that the client is the expert. It is my job to empower their autonomy, meaning, and hope already within them. As you color the room, I hope to make the space safe enough to make observations about your values, not mine. What is important to you? What does therapy look like to you? Let us accomplish the goals you already have set out, and discover new ones together.

I find the use of DBT most beneficial to address emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness, which are common among those with trauma and other everyday stressors.
What happened to you? This is the question that should be asked when a person decides to confront their trauma. So much of the focus is on "What is wrong with you?" that we fail to take in the traumatic events that led us here. Let’s work together to confront your trauma and make those healing steps forward. While I take special interest in traumatic experiences, I also have extensive experience working with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, low self-esteem, OCD, life transitions, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, and major depressive disorder.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
