Therapists in Anchorage, AK
My style as a therapist can best be described as eclectic, as I draw from a variety of techniques and theoretical orientations. That being said I tend to be highly client centered, which means I assume clients are the authorities about their own systems. In therapy, it's my job to describe what the science of psychology has to offer given the presenting problem and my professional experience in the area. However, it's my clients who get to decide how this information is applicable to their lives. More about my therapeutic orientation can be found on my website: www.reynoldstherapy.com

To anyone else, things might look just fine. You put in a lot of work to keep things fine! But when you slow down, that put-together veneer leaves you all the more isolated as you cope with the self-criticism, frustration, pain, and general turmoil inside. Where is all this coming from? Holding it together takes so much effort. Is it like this for everyone? Is it just another stressful week? You might have spent a long time thinking or being told that you are somehow the problem, but inside, you know that this constant struggle, this inner conflict, isn’t really you.

Throughout our lives we develop belief systems about how and who we 'should' be. These systems create thought, emotion, and behavior patterns that lead to an experience of separation and isolation. I view therapy as an odyssey that moves us back into intimate relationship with self and other.

With life comes challenges; beautiful and heavy or dark. Every person has a story and it is valuable! I believe that while trauma can have a powerful impact, we are incredibly resilient. Every human deserves to experience healing, to live life fully, and thrive. I am holistic and humanistic; mind, body, soul, spirit are connected. I believe in the power of curiosity, energy, grace, connection, and humor. Therapy offers new learning, self-discovery, skill-building, growth, and healing. With practice we learn to work through trauma to be fully present for all the moments in this life. Be curious. I look forward to connecting with you!

At some point in our lives, we will experience sadness, anger, betrayal, trauma, loss, anxiety and stress. This is the human condition, however depending on how we respond, this may be a warning that we are attaching negative thoughts to this pain and labeling it as suffering. Pain is not inevitable, suffering is optional. When we are able to change our thinking, we can change our responses to it. My intent is to create a safe space for people to explore and investigate their thoughts, resolve inner conflicts and achieve balance in their lives. With support and guidance, we have the power to end our suffering and heal.

I aim to make clients feel listened to and understood, and to equip them with relevant knowledge and skills to understand and accept themselves, as well as to take any needed actions to feel better and accomplish their goals. I love figuring out the 'why' behind a client's struggles, what would work better for them, and seeing people make progress.

I believe that successful therapy work begins with a good relationship between therapist and client, and therefore seek to ensure a common ground to build upon. Early in my career I discovered that often presenting issues have roots from our childhood experiences and relationships. I have dedicated much of my training since to becoming proficient in working with trauma and dissociative symptoms. The good news is that we can process these experiences, and grow to create a greater quality of life!

“There’s something wrong with me.” It doesn’t matter how good things get – these thoughts are always lurking in the back of your mind. All the good you do and all the positive things you achieve in your life are never enough for you to feel accomplished. The deeper you sink into these feelings, the more alienated you become. Life feels hopeless and you’re on the verge of resigning to living with that uneasy ball in the pit of your stomach. Your baseline is a constant state of emotional duck-and-cover. It’s exhausting. It’s discouraging. It’s isolating. And worst of all, you can’t seem to make it stop.
