As a black man, I understand the apprehension and stigma that may come with seeking help for your mental health.
Let me be a part of your journey. As your counselor, I bring a sense of ease and a reduction in anxiety to this process. I will be present with you and provide a safe space where we can discuss your thoughts and feelings. My ideal client is one that may be dealing with issues like depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, or having trouble with relationships, just to name a few. Or maybe a big change has occurred in your life, you are feeling stuck or at a crossroad. If mental health wellness is your goal, I can assist with that too. I connect very well with clients of all ages, especially adolescents, teens and adult males.

I specialize in working with Black women, LGBTQIA+ communities, and historically marginalized communities.
Do you feel overwhelmed by what life has thrown your way? Getting out of our own heads and speaking out loud are the first steps to making progress toward being our most authentic selves. My role is to ask you introspective questions and provide alternative ideas to navigate your circumstances, but YOU will guide the discussion, sharing what is most important for me to know to help you meet your goals. Taking an affirming, DEI, and culturally humble approach to therapy, I honor how our unique experiences, strengths, and identities have shaped us in many ways and provide a map for who we want to be.

So many of us are suffering because we are unconsciously holding on to limiting beliefs and maladaptive coping behaviors that have helped us to survive in the past, but are no longer serving us in the present. We fear our own shadow and conceal parts of us that we have been taught not to like - the parts that make us human. This causes our actions to be driven by fear, doubt, and shame rather than freedom, confidence, and love. You have the power to be the person who takes up space confidently, honor your needs, and live from a place of freedom and unconditional love.

Supervised by Larry Bell, LMFT-S; My ideal client is a person, couple, or group who is ready to walk down the path of healing and connection in order to live their lives in an authentic and loving way. I believe that connection with others starts with a genuine connection with self. Issues, needs, and goals vary from person to person, but the folks I'm happy to work with are bringing their whole selves to the room knowing that this work can be difficult, but it is worth it to live in a healed, complete state of being. In addition to therapy, I offer DOT SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) services.

We know that it can feel like these feelings will never end, but it’s not going to be this way forever. You’ve been stumbling along trying to find your way out of the pit of negative thoughts. You’ve landed here because you believe that things can be different, you know you have it in you to reduce the thoughts from running rampant in your head. But something just keeps getting in your way, you keep running into a wall and can’t navigate your way around it. You’re not ready to give up, but you’re getting close. You want your life back, you want to find that person that you used to be.

Instilling hope and resilience through treatment is a hallmark of our work in this sacred space! As a LGBTQ cis woman of color, I have both lived & clinical experience that attest to the importance of using a culturally-centered & trauma-informed approach that gives my clients the space to heal, no matter their background. A strong therapeutic alliance is a key to a successful treatment. Being able to reach someone's emotional feelings will open the doors for personal growth and positive developments. I am of the opinion that everyone has the capacity to change and improve their lives if the right therapeutic tools and coping skills are applied. My over 25 years in the field of mental health thought me this. I utilize the eclectic approach which allows me to incorporate different treatment modalities to achieve our 'agreed' goals. I will get you back to acceptable level of psychological functioning and you will be in control of your life again.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
