As an African American, male-identified therapist, I bring a trauma-informed lens to my work. I am particularly passionate about working with individuals who are stigmatized against seeking therapy. I am an empathetic and skilled therapist, committed to helping my clients heal and grow. I enjoy working with individuals and couples and working together to heal, grow, regulate, and bolster individual value and develop healthy relationships with healthy boundaries. I believe counseling brings great value to the person or couple who decide to do the work. I'd love to help you define and reach your counseling goals.

My approach to counseling acknowledges that treatment is as varied as humans are. Therapy focuses on the person’s goals and development, not the counselor’s desires for them. I am deeply compassionate, non-judgmental, and believe that the most effective therapy is truly collaborative between client and clinician.I work with clients across the lifespan but have most experience with children-middle aged adults. I work with individuals as well as couples and families, and am open to clients with “non-traditional” family styles such as chosen families and non-monogamous relationships with or without children.

Life was meant to challenge us, but when those challenges become more than we can handle, who can we turn to for that extra support or even just a listening ear? Challenges can come in any form, whether it be in your marriage, from family conflict, or parenting struggles, I make it my goal to walk alongside you in whatever ways you need.

Your life is like running a marathon on a treadmill, you are putting out a lot of effort but getting nowhere. This, despite taking multitasking to a whole other level, even down to paying bills on your phone while on the toilet. It's still not enough. In theory, you know you're supposed to take care of yourself. But according to your calculations, you need at least 36 hours in a day and possibly all those late-night infomercial "As Seen on TV" gadgets to make it happen. This pace is unsustainable. Something has got to change.

I see you. You're here because something isn't working. You know it is time to do the work of addressing current challenges so you can move through this chapter of life in a healthier way that honors you. Working up the nerve to go to therapy can feel like a overwhelming process, but it doesn't have to be. While there may be some anxiety-provoking aspects of working with me for the first time (or any therapist for that matter), you don't have to do it alone. You can bring ALL of who you are to our work together, and you've come to the right place!

Life transitions can cause great strain in our lives and can lead to even greater pain if not addressed. Signs that you may be struggling with a life transition are depression, anxiety, feeling unsettled and lost, emptiness, fatigue, chronic pain, unexplained ailments, and illnesses. Life is full of painful transitions. Transitions can disconnect you from your true self, what’s important to you, and ultimately disconnect you from a life with meaning. Greater clarity, self-confidence, and balance will help you reconnect with your true self and your values to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

You’re standing at the crossroads—your child teetering on the edge of adulthood—surrounded by a whirlwind of emotions. I know you wish to see your child thrive. Let’s talk and navigate this pivotal time together. The teen and young adult years are a complex dance of joy, confusion, and worry. The path forward, though full of potential, may seem treacherous. You wonder if they're making the right choices, if they're prepared for the world, how to best support them without hovering. The emotional rollercoaster, the shifting dynamics, and the late-night worries are overwhelming. But you don't have to go through this alone.

I have always believed that healthy interpersonal communication is one of the most dynamic and invaluable resources that we have at our disposal. In counseling, as in life, I aim to cultivate a practice of empathetic wellness intervention in service of creating clear and coherent communication across race, class, gender and sexuality, while also prioritizing community, accessibility, and holistic wellness. I enjoy working with interpersonal relationships, familial trauma, anxiety, guilt/shame, and identity formation, and am especially interested in working with women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ populations.

My ideal client is someone who's bravely confronting their emotions and seeking growth. They might feel apprehensive about sharing their deepest thoughts, perhaps due to past experiences or societal pressures. Their needs center around a safe space where they can be their authentic self, and they yearn for understanding and connection. Their goal? To navigate their challenges, find solace, and evolve. They seek therapy to unlock barriers hindering their growth and to embrace the grace and empathy that come with shared vulnerabilities. At the heart of it, they desire to feel seen, heard, and empowered on their journey to well-being.

You feel stressed, worried and at times angry as if there is a weight on your shoulders. This weight is affecting your family, friends and even your job. What you’re doing isn’t working anymore. Still you don’t think you should tell some stranger your problems, especially if they won’t get where you’re coming from or how you feel. But you want to make a change. If you are looking for a place to feel heard, someone who won’t judge you or just the relief of finally being able to share how you feel with someone who won’t look at you differently then I encourage you to take that chance. I welcome you, What’s on your mind?

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
