I have worked in the community mental health setting, acute psychiatric inpatient (child & adolescent) hospital, conducted forensic evaluations to assess juvenile competency to stand trial, and provide group and individual therapy.
I was born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, but have had the amazing opportunity to live and work all over the country including: Washington, DC; New Orleans, LA; Miami, FL and Boulder, CO. Lynchburg is by far my favorite place and I was happy to return home in 2005. I enjoy cooking, gardening, reading and spending time with my family and friends. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). I graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 2003 with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Masters degree in Community Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Counseling.

My areas of specialty include adolescent counseling having worked with children with ADHD, PTSD, Various forms of depression, ODD, Conduct Disorder, ASD and RAD, etc.
Having worked extensively with children, adolescents and their families, I would say my ideal client is pre- teen to adult working through behavioral struggles including impulse control, defiance, hyperactivity, etc. I work closely with and honor the family unit and also work with couples, relationship and marriage counseling for the betterment of that unit. I also have worked with and specialize in treatment of dual diagnosis, particularly when addictive behaviors are a primary concern. Being trained in ASAM criteria I also work with additive behaviors in both adolescent and adults.

Through play therapy, art therapy, and person-centered approaches, children and adolescents can learn the tools to cope with life's challenges in a positive and healthy way.
Sometimes we as people just get stuck. When you're a child or adolescent, that may look like anxiety, overwhelm, aggression, isolation, and more. However, we also have the hope and possibility to be unstuck, we just may need some new tools to get there - that's where counseling comes in. Healing and growth and wellness are all possible and worth working for, and asking for help is sometimes the first step.

Taylor has worked in the field of mental health for nearly ten years involving direct contact with children, adolescent, and adult survivors of trauma. She has directly worked with survivors from various ranges of abuse and neglect to help instill physical safety, healthy boundaries, and hope. She firmly believes there is no “one way” to partake in therapy and sometimes it takes multiple attempts to bring light and awareness to those areas in our lives keeping us stuck and in the dark. She looks forward to supporting you during this time of healing and self-exploration.

Working with adults and adolescents, I hope to assist you in finding ways to cope with the challenges you face.
Welcome everyone; I am excited to meet you! Life can throw us all kinds of curve balls and sometimes we struggle to manage its many difficulties. You are not alone. Though we cannot control what happens to us, we can decide how we will react to it. With the proper support and guidance, life's struggles become a bit more manageable. “Mental health is not a destination but a process. It’s about how you drive, not where you’re going.” I look forward to walking alongside you through all walks of life, encouraging you to become the best version of yourself.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
