I have helped adolescents who have struggled with depression, feeling isolated, been bullied, having divorced parents, and other issues.
I believe that relationships are fundamental to a person's health and happiness. Whether romantic, interpersonal, peer, parent-child, or work relationships I have found that the issues people bring to therapy stem from difficulties in connecting. Furthermore, I believe that a safe, open, and honest relationship in therapy is the key to personal mental health and creating healthy relationship's in one's life. I do interpersonal therapy with individuals, couples, and groups. In particular, I enjoy connecting with young men starting their careers, gamers, and adolescent boys.

I have experience leading child and adolescent groups, adult groups, parent workshops, staff trainings, inpatient and outpatient hospital groups, and Steven -Ministries workshops.
Life is filled with sorrow and joy, frustration and wonder, stagnation and growth, obstacles and openings. At times, our skill set and resources are not optimal for helping us adapt to the shifts and movement in our lives. I believe that art therapy and counseling can support understanding of our skills and resources that better equip us to adapt to life's changes. Art therapy allows opportunities to imagine the best, healthiest version of ourselves and permit clarifying moments where we perceive possibility and potential. My goal is to support clients in becoming active agents in developing positive, purposeful ideas towards wellness and good health.

Giving yourself time and space to acknowledge your experience by sharing it with a therapist serves to ground you in your true self, hopefully reducing the anxiety and frustration of trying to “figure things out”. People need people. My goal is to meet you where you’re at; honor your vulnerability and willingness to ask for help. See if we can find solutions together: whether those solutions involve concrete outcomes or, just as important, processing of your thoughts and feelings. Why make life more difficult by trying to go it alone?

I treat older adolescents, adults and couples in psychotherapy. I use an interactive, psychodynamic approach in which I help clients understand how problems in their early relationships with their parents and siblings affect their current intimate and work relationships. I help individuals discover and work through underlying issues which are causing anxiety, depression, or other unwanted behaviors, such as eating disorders or relationship disturbances.

The decision to begin psychotherapy is a significant one and finding the right therapist is half the battle. The therapeutic relationship plays an important role in our work together. My goal is to provide you with a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings about your circumstances including developmental transitions such as entering college, young adulthood; experiencing work or parenting concerns; pre-marital and marital transitions such as those almost or newly married, infidelity, divorce, relational strain; and concerns of general life dissatisfaction resulting in symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
