Your child is a source of light. But perhaps you've noticed their light has dimmed recently and you feel concerned. Perhaps your teen is falling behind in school, having difficulty connecting with their friends, or experiencing confusion as they explore their gender identity. Your young child may be having anger outbursts or challenges with their behavior at home. Adjusting to the post-COVID lifestyle might be causing ongoing worries and changes in mood or personality. Or your child might have experienced a major stressor like divorce, a death in the family, or even a traumatic event like a car accident or an act of violence.

I help kids, grownups, and everyone in between find their own True Voice, so they can live the lives they deserve. Maybe your child is misbehaving at school, or your teenager is sullen and distanced, or you're in love and know you'd like to stay with this person, if you could only change a few things that really scare you. Or maybe there's an aggressive part of you that your parents didn't know how to handle, or a hurt and vulnerable side that you've always felt too ashamed to feel.

I also hold specialties in maternal mental health, parenting, and child/adolescent therapy.
Whether you are struggling with relationships or dating, parenting, finding your purpose, or feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed, beginning therapy can be the first step to finding relief. My work is guided by the notion that therapy should be, above all, helpful. Some days, you may find that you want specific techniques and strategies. Other days, you may benefit from a patient, listening ear. Sometimes, you may wish to delve into earlier experiences to understand why you are feeling the way you do. I believe these are all important aspects of the therapeutic journey, and I am here to here to help you in the ways you need most.

Reaching out to find a therapist for your child may be an overwhelming experience. It means that your child may need some extra support, and that your efforts to find them that support are based in love and maybe some frustration. Perhaps you’ve noticed some concerning changes in your young child’s demeanor, a lack of confidence or increased temper tantrums. Maybe you've observed your teenager slipping into depression or anxiety as they merge into young adulthood. I’m here to support you and your family.

I love working with teens and pre-teens. If you have tried everything you can think of to help your teen and they are still struggling, it’s not your fault. It doesn't mean defeat when you ask for help, it means you are smart and you know your child deserves better. Being a teenager is hard. There’s so much pressure from parents, coaches, friends, romantic interests, teachers, and an enormous amount of pressure they put on themselves. They want someone to talk to as they figure out who they are and who they want to be. It can be difficult to be vulnerable and friends often have well-meaning, but misguided advice.

Are you struggling with overwhelming emotions? Have you experienced loss, trauma, or other challenges? I am here for you, to help you overcome the emotional pain of past experiences. As a teen, I myself personally experienced the devastating losses of multiple loved ones. Through my own heartbreak, emotional pain, and grief, I was even more inspired to comfort and sit with others during their most challenging times. Funny thing is: I knew I wanted to become a psychotherapist before I even know what a therapist was! I feel so lucky today to counsel clients with such diverse and different stories, backgrounds, and experiences.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
