I completed my graduate degree in addictions counseling at the Hazelden-Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies and my undergraduate degree in alcohol and drug use disorder counseling from the University of Memphis.
Are you suffering from an addiction to alcohol, heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax or other benzodiazepines, prescription pain killers, marijuana, ecstasy, molly, or any other substance? Are you suffering from an addiction to pornography, serial dating, promiscuous sex, affairs, prostitutes, or any other sexual addiction? Are you suffering from an addiction to gambling, food, relationships, shopping and spending, or to a person? Do you feel like you are excessively dependent on another person to the point of an unhealthy codependency?

I work well with adult men and women, and with couples, in addressing issues of: anxiety and depression; stress; intimate and family relationship problems; substance abuse; sex addiction and other sexual issues; and anger management.
Sometimes what we need most is someone to just listen carefully, and to ask the right questions, as we talk out our problems and discover the solutions that were in us all along. We seldom want someone who pretends to know the solution to every problem; but we do want someone who knows the right questions to ask, and where to look in search of answers. I am that kind of therapist - I believe that we each hold within us the answers to our deepest questions; all we need is some guidance to help us find them.

Robert’s specialties are substance abuse treatment, co-occurring disorders, depression, bipolar, anxiety spectrum disorders, grief & loss, and helping those recovering from trauma and chronic illness.
Comments from Robert about his approach to therapy: We all have times in our lives that can shake us at our foundation. Coming into therapy, whether if it’s for the first time, or this has been a theme in your life takes courage. I think to be helpful the first thing is to feel understood, feel heard, acknowledged, and validated. Next, it is to discover whatever it is that you’re facing means for you as an individual, then gaining skills with which to cope adaptively. I believe acceptance is the key to facing difficulties in life. Acceptance does not mean approval, it means we learn to live life as it is, not how we want it.

“Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up” - Brené Brown. You are the expert in understanding the problems that occur in your life. You have been through the same cycles and you know very well how problems start. The issue is - getting the cycles to stop. You could just stop repeating the same behaviors, but it would create a host of other problems. You do not have balance and deep down you want to reclaim your sense of purpose and joy. Sound familiar? I have been there, too. The first step to regaining a sense of balance is to make a therapy appointment and just have a conversation.

By looking backward, I can begin to live forward by becoming who I really am. Attachment shapes behavior and thinking. Survival skills from earlier life become maladaptive barriers to growth. Addiction and mental health problems often reflect a False Self. If I have the courage to confront the masking qualities of this False Self, I am ready for change and to allow the True Self, my authentic and spiritual nature, to emerge. While we cannot make these changes alone, readiness is indicated by my willingness to engage beyond therapy in Twelve Step programs or other means of engaging with others.

If your goals include relief from depression, anxiety, taxing relationships, substance use, harmful behaviors, and multiple diagnoses, and you long to get along better in the world, I want to work with you to achieve those goals. Are you disconnected from others, stuck in a cycle of pain, grief, and defeat that keeps you stifled, with a feeling of hopelessness when your efforts to improve are short-lived? Together we can examine the patterns of behavior that keep you in negativity, and empower you to be with feelings, and past events, to safely, and lovingly process the memories and emotions that these behaviors are rooted in.

I spent 15 years working in a substance abuse treatment program, which taught me that beyond the initial struggle to get/stay substance free, individuals most often have underlying psychological issues, i.
An ideal client would be one, I think, that has arrived at a place that tells them they very much need to change or understand something in their lives, and are ready to begin work on that. I believe that everyone struggles with the actual making of those changes even when acknowledged. The willingness to seek out help represents the courage necessary to move toward those goals of understanding and change.

All I've ever wanted to do with my life is help people. I started my journey in 1997. I have experience working with survivors and perpetrators of domestic violence, teens and adults struggling with substance use disorders and/or co-occurring diagnoses as well as various levels of mild to moderate mental health. Although I use an array of therapy models, I'm most comfortable with Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. Whether your looking for an ear to vent to or someone to give you concrete tasks, I'm your person.

James spent ten years providing outpatient services where he observed that mental illness and chemical dependence issues, otherwise known as “co-occurring disorders” were low priority. Agencies seldom have time and resources to focus on one or the other, let alone “both” sides of the mental health and substance dependence matter. James became a social worker to work for change, and this dichotomy was unacceptable. Reliance was born out of this frustration as a possible solution for the those that it is able to serve. Substance use, mental health, or spiritual change are all goals Reliance will seek to facilitate alongside you.

Addiction Therapists
What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
