I have specialized training in holistic interventions for substance use disorders.
I am a queer, white, cisgender psychotherapist. My practice is relational and grounded in anti-oppressive and liberatory social work perspectives. I use radical acceptance and compassionate curiosity to explore conditioning, name collective traumas from institutional and structural oppression, witness and support the multiple facets of self, and celebrate the wisdom of our minds, bodies, and spirits. I work to create a therapy space that is as fun and empowering as it is insightful and supportive.

I specialize in adult individuals struggling with all types of issues: life transitions, depression and anxiety, addiction, bi-polar, OCD, and more. I enjoy working with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. I employ a psychodynamic framework with most of my clients, however, I utilizes many cognitive-behavioral techniques and principles, as well. I especially enjoy the integration of Christian spirituality and psychology, though I welcome any one from any background. I believe that who we are is formed in relationship, so healing comes through (the therapeutic) relationship.

I work with teens and adults with anxiety, depression, mood regulation, symptoms of PTSD/CPTSD, family challenges, and those who are in recovery from substance use.
Reaching out to begin therapy can be both overwhelming and a hopeful time to begin something new. A time to create change in your relationships, work functioning, or day to day life. I take a holistic approach to therapy work and seek to understand each person within their environment, which allows us to work collaboratively on changes that feel attainable and sustainable. I like to start a session by offering a cup of coffee (or drink of your choice!) and sit down in open conversation steered by your needs at that moment. Laughter, tears, grief, and joy are some of the many welcomed and honored emotions in the therapeutic space.

I’ve worked with men, women, children, couples and first-time parents; as well as incarcerated individuals and those who have struggled with substance abuse issues.
It can be challenging to get started looking for a therapist. Meeting with someone who is unknown to you, to share your most intimate fears, memories and concerns, is not something that most people rush toward. However, life is full of difficulties and often our lives reach a point, where it may be helpful to work through conflicts with someone, who can help make sense of it all. Meeting with a therapist who has worked with clients from many walks of life and who can understand, relate to and establish a comfortable connection with, is important.

Most of my clients have had addiction issues. I have learned that many people become addicted because they have had very painful experiences in their lives. Often those painful experiences are related to their substance use. Using drugs or alcohol helps ease the pain of their most painful memories. Unfortunately, using creates a whole host of other problems as well. Therapy can help identify, address, and potentially resolve those issues without drugs. EMDR therapy in particular has been shown to help greatly in reducing the pain of our most painful memories. I offer a friendly, nonjudgmental attitude to users, friends, and family.

Choosing a therapist is an important decision. Thank you for your consideration and I hope that we have an opportunity to work together. I believe that all of us have unique strengths and potential. Psychotherapy offers clients the opportunity to utilize these strengths to overcome a variety of life's challenges. These challenges may include anxiety, depression, addiction, career stress, relationship issues, and family conflict. I believe that clients gain the most from therapy when they work hard to explore thoughts and patterns of behavior that might be holding them back.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
