This includes but is not limited to those such as depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, ADHD, stress, anger management, low self-esteem, loss and grief, divorce, and relationship issues.
It’s no secret that life comes with struggles – or that those struggles can impact every part of a person’s life. No matter the age, gender, race, or overall walk of life, those struggles can interfere with one's mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. The good news is that counseling can help with everything from childhood trauma to day-day life. With that in mind, Crossroads Counseling Services opened its doors in April 2007 with the mission of helping residents of Plainfield, Ottawa, Morris, and Yorkville, IL deal with and overcome these issues and trauma.

The clients I most often work with are trying to manage changes in their lives as well as depression, anxiety, self-esteem and a variety of other mental health concerns. They have found that handling daily tasks, finding motivation, energy, and strength to handle life's challenges has become overwhelming. This can be due to current life stressors, or the manifestation of life events from the past. The focus in working together will be to identify your needs and goals, and implement changes and added insight to help you achieve these goals.

My specialties include eating disorders, substance use, and trauma.
Maybe you’re coming to therapy as a first-timer and you’re scared of being known by someone else. Maybe you’re a seasoned client and you’re looking to dig deeper into your feelings and struggles. You could be challenged with taking care of yourself. Perhaps you’re sad and you can’t figure out why. You might have a difficult relationship with food and your body. You may want help conquering one specific hurdle, or maybe you’re not sure yet where you want to go in therapy. Whatever you bring to our session, you’ll be greeted with warmth and understanding.

I specialize in Trauma, Grief and Loss, Substance Abuse and Recovery, Sexual Orientation, Life Transitions and Stress Management.
“After trauma the world becomes sharply divided between those who know and those who don’t. People who have not shared the traumatic experience cannot be trusted, because they can’t understand it” - Dr. B. Van Der Kolk. Because of my own experiences with trauma, I have a unique understanding of the importance of working with someone who “gets it”. Trauma and grief are incredibly heavy and affect all aspects of our lives. Through therapeutic work, I have found my way to the other side. My passion is to help others do the same.

Client-centered is always Kim's approach during a session. This allows a client to open up at their own pace. She takes time to build rapport with her clients, which creates a space for clients to process complex feelings and emotions. A few areas of specialization for Kim are substance abuse, anxiety, and family conflict.

I am devoted to helping people not only address their physical and mental health, but also to identify how stigma impacts the healing process. I began in 2014, working with both adolescents experiencing Substance Use Disorder and their families. Since that time, I have developed skills working with people experiencing a wider range of challenges including: depression and other mood disorders, anxiety, and trauma. My intention in every session is to provide a safe space for people of any race, gender, sexual orientation or family structure (however that may look for you). Asking for help is hard and I can only hope to honor that.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
