I am trained in evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and motivational interviewing.
I'm not just like a regular therapist, I'm a cool therapist – Hello and welcome! You’ve made it to the right place. We can all benefit from having a person to talk to and I can help support you through all of life’s transitions. I specialize in helping veterans, first responders, and their families as I have close ties to this community. I spent many times on the receiving end as a friend or loved one talking through the everyday stresses that come with the job. As a responder, you sign on the dotted line to serve and protect the community but do not sign up for accompanying traumatic stress.

Sometimes life throws us challenges that we struggle to handle. Sometimes friends and family are able to help. However, there are times when we need additional help. In therapy, we will work together to help you find your strengths to work through the challenges you are facing, that might seem too overwhelming to handle. I use a variety of therapeutic methods to help find the one that best fits you and your needs.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”-Maya Angelou. It can be difficult taking the first step to seek out help when life seems unmanageable. However, it is often more difficult to work through the issues causing this disruption alone. Whether this is due to limited support in your life, or feeling that you have to take care of it yourself, you do not have to work through it alone.

There are times in our lives when we experience emotional distress which makes meeting our everyday responsibilities challenging or interferes with our happiness. Emotional distress may be due to a transition such as a job loss or even a new profession, the loss of a loved one or the birth of a newborn, a relationship breakup or the start of a new relationship, or it could be trauma you have experienced now manifesting itself as emotional distress in your life. There are times when we can handle the negative emotions we experience such as sadness, emptiness, loneliness, or anxiousness and other times we may need some help.

We all need a place where we feel safe. Where we can speak freely without fear of judgment. Where we can talk about the difficult things we’re facing. You’ll find that safe space here with me.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
