My primary therapy methods are attachment-based, psychodynamic, and narrative.
I work often with clients on issues such as learning to set and hold boundaries, unpacking codependency, and understanding why they are unhappy in relationships. We all find ourselves repeating behaviors and patterns that once helped but begin to no longer work for us. Often my clients are in a stuck place, a life transition, grieving a loss, or wanting to change relational patterns. Other areas of interest and experience include identifying and addressing current patterns of abuse or healing from past abuse (emotional, sexual, physical, spiritual).

For me, “psychotherapy has to do with…people playing together.” My therapeutic approach is grounded in practicality, metaphor, and paradox. Whether you want to examine your relationship to archetypes and epic tales, investigate the mundane and extraordinary beauty in doing the dishes, or delve into your style of relating to another being: bring all of it - it is welcome and deserving of your attention. Fundamentally, I am fascinated by people - our stories, our journeys and our capacities for grace and awe.

However you have come to find yourself pursuing therapy, welcome. Being human beings on this earth is a complicated thing, it is a chaotic time to be living life, and you are worthy of finding some space for care and support as you navigate through how to be a human.

Summer 2024 Update: I have immediate in-person availability. - Welcome. Maybe you're here because of an old current of suffering, branched out in channels, running wild under the surface of things. Or maybe it's more specific - an event long past or currently unraveling. Maybe you feel plagued by a background hum of panic, or an old wound that just won’t seem to heal. Maybe you feel trapped in patterns that keep repeating, a chronic emptiness, or a confusing internal force that blocks your efforts to fully work, or love, or play. And you want something more from life - more capacity, more ease, more joy.

Life is a process of continuously understanding ourselves more deeply and wholly. At times this can be delightful and at times it can be arduous and painful. My hope for our work together is that no matter where you are in your journey, I can create a space that is safe to bring and explore your whole self. I work from a psychodynamic and attachment lens to more deeply understand your inner experience and the way you exist in the world. I hold that relationality is one of the anchors of meaningful living.

It feels like you’ve lost everything. Morning no longer holds the promise of a new day, only the weight of unspeakable sadness. This is just the way life is now. The mail is piling up. Work deadlines are coming and going. Food has no taste, and everything that once seemed so important feels meaningless. Everyone else has moved on, but you're still stuck in that moment when your whole world ended. You can’t move on because you can’t imagine living without that love. And moving on would mean giving up that last remaining connection to the life you had. But, at the same time, you know you can't go on this way either. You feel trapped.

If there is one constant in life, it's change; a new job or suddenly having to look for one , a new relationship or a heart break, a marriage, a divorce, life not working out the way you had hoped. Let me help you navigate these uncertain times, helping you to find a way through them or take a new tack or tap into hidden strengths. Sometimes we can change the situation; sometimes we must change ourselves, tearing down limiting beliefs and narratives to create new beliefs and narratives that honor our true self, our true values, and our goals.

I approach my work from an Integrative Theoretical Perspective that is holistic, humanistic and client-centered in approach. Although I draw from a wide range of theoretical perspectives, I am most influenced by Mindfulness Based CBT and Stress Reduction, IFS (Internal Family Systems), Somatic Therapy and EMDR, examined through an anti-oppressive framework. I think there is no greater pain in life than bearing an untold story or feeling like you have to go it alone and do your work completely by yourself. As your therapist, I view my role as a fellow travel companion and a guide to help you navigate the terrain of your life. I seek to create a safe space for you to explore your story, create detours where there are obstacles, and create a path to a better future. I enjoy working with folks who not only want to find relief from their problems, but also seek to shift the paradigm of how they see themselves in relation to others and the world.

Therapy can serve many purposes and often begins as one-thing, evolving into another. Whether a major life change, deep suffering, grief, or curiosity brings you to therapy, we all have much to gain in understanding ourselves better. Life's complexities can make it difficult to unweave our own comprehension of the abilities and power we wield. Some of our greatest distresses arise when we feel out of control and uncertain how to bring about change.

You're struggling with past traumas. Maybe you don't even realize that a lot of your frustration, anxiety and depression and current struggles are linked to past traumas. It can be overwhelming dealing with intense emotions and identify the why behind it to change your life. I would love to work with you and address some of the emotions and struggles that you have been dealing with. Have there been some past events in your life that have fundamentally changed you as a person?

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and certified group psychotherapist (CGP) with expertise in group dynamics and trauma. I offer individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and organizational consulting. I enjoy working with people who are motivated to change and ready to explore what might be blocking them. The unconscious is powerful and when something is not working, the body gives us signs by creating symptoms. I work to create a safe enough space so that my clients can explore what might be underlying the symptoms that are observable. Together, we work to come to confront the unsayable. I am trained in EMDR.

Deep healing occurs in safe, attuned, compassionate relationships with ourselves and others. It is often our trouble with relationships, anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts and feelings, addictions, performance issues, etc. that clue us into our need to slow down and tend to the stories and meaning (often implicitly) encoded in our mind, hearts, and bodies. Good therapy is a process of not only alleviating distressing symptoms, but learning to know ourselves and the ways our past shows up in our present, so that we can more deeply flourish in our relationships.

If you are here that means you are likely seeking support for something in your life that feels difficult, overwhelming, confusing, or painful. My work is to offer you a safe, kind, and accepting space to further explore your internal and external realities. Together we will be curious about your unique life experience, the impact of your experience, the struggles and conflicts you may be facing, and what you need to thrive. I believe therapy is the process of uncovering who you were meant to be before the world told you who you should be or wounded you with its expectations and cruelty.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
