*Practice is full.* Do you find yourself repeating the same dysfunctional patterns in relationships? Or maybe you feel like you're on high alert much of the time, waiting for something bad to happen? Maybe you've been reaching for a glass of wine just to help you sleep at night? Wounds from the past - divorce, abuse, loss, bullying, etc.- stick around, causing problems long after the events have ended. Often, we don't even realize the effect that trauma has on us. And if left untreated, these unwanted patterns will continue.

Not accepting new clients. Hello! I'm Karen Haag, and Wholehearted Counseling is my completely virtual private practice. I specialize in working with women with trauma, particularly childhood abuse, sexual abuse, incest, and emotional abuse. Together, we explore the impact of past experiences on the brain, body, and mind. We work to identify the negative self-scripts and worldviews that are the result of trauma, and to replace these with more realistic, adaptive, and compassionate internal and external responses. My style of therapy is warm and down to earth, and my primary goal is to create a genuine human-to-human relationship.

We are the expert on ourselves. We know what we are struggling with, what we need, and how we want to get there, but it can be difficult to uncover that knowledge on your own. I am here to provide a safe, welcoming, and respectful space where you can explore and uncover that knowledge. This is a space where your body, identity, thoughts, and story can be openly seen without shame. I am passionate about treating disordered eating and eating disorders and supporting young women and people through life transitions and navigating the difficult choices that happen at critical periods of time and development.

Have you been feeling overwhelmed or have you lost motivation? Have you been through trauma? Does ADHD or Autism impact your day to day function? You may have tried to find your own ways to cope and have just run out of ideas. Reaching out for counseling can be challenging, and I get that. Maybe you are skeptical that counseling is the right place for you. I believe that everyone is capable of changing their lives for the better.

I like helping individual clients with depression, communication, self-esteem, and academic/career issues. Most of the clients I work with had been thinking about getting help for a long time, but either wanted to try and deal with it themselves or thought counseling was only for other people. I know talking about mental health still carries a stigma for some and I respect the courage of everyone who moves past that stigma to enter my office.

My philosophy is that each person has the ability within them to make changes in their life and my job as a therapist is to walk with each client on that journey. I offer a safe, non-judgmental environment to be able to process trauma that may be interfering with day-to-day life, learn and practice tools to ground and cope when triggers arise and to be able to problem solve in an unbiased place.

Live life intentionally. This is how most of us want to live our lives, with energy and purpose, spending our time doing those things that bring us joy and meaning, pursuing our dreams, aspiring to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be. Often, difficult thoughts and feelings get in the way of being the person we want to be for ourselves, for our loved ones, and sabotaging our vision of the life we’ve always dreamt of living. We get stuck. And in that inertia, it can be easy to lose contact with the things that matter the most to us in our lives. We may act in ways that are inconsistent with our values and goals.
