Seeing a counselor is about becoming more aware of yourself, your patterns of thinking, feeling, behaving, communicating, and taking charge of your life. Stress, discomfort, or even pain can be powerful motives for positive change. When we can find ways of bringing our strengths, weaknesses, honesty, and life experiences to develop insight, counseling can bring peace and help you work through your difficult life issues. Counseling is collaborative and we will work together to develop goals, as you are the expert on yourself and I will help you develop awareness with strategies to achieve those goals; enriching your life.

Your history and your goals for treatment are the most important parts of whatever kind of psychological services you engage in, and because of this, our work will begin with a careful and collaborative conversation about your situation and your narrative. This will culminate in a thoughtful discussion of treatment goals. You will find that I am an active participant in the work we do together, providing feedback and encouragement as you interact with new ways of approaching your self and your daily life.

I offer authentic, compassionate therapy in a safe environment. Therapy should allow for the cultivation of rapport and trust so that we can work collaboratively to examine meaning and purpose as defined by you in your own life. As well, we can also take a closer look at unhealthy, unhelpful patterns that may be present in your life and relationships.

Are you grappling with significant life changes like loss, relationship challenges, or personal identity shifts that have triggered overwhelming emotions such as anxiety, fear, guilt, or anger? Despite trying various approaches like confiding in friends, staying active, or turning to unhealthy habits, you may still feel adrift, seeking a clear path forward. The idea of therapy may evoke vulnerability, especially if past experiences have left you disheartened. Embarking on therapy can be daunting, yet pivotal. My person-centered approach aims to help you not only accept yourself but also transform how you navigate stressors.

Whether we are exploring the relationship we have with ourselves or with others, I believe compassion and loving-presence are essential to understanding the parts of ourselves that feel tender and/or condemned. It isn’t uncommon for these tender parts to appear to be stuck in patterns that seem to further disconnect us from ourselves and others. I enjoy working with neurodivergence, those with complex trauma, LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples. My work is an anti-oppressive, relational, humorous, and client-centered.

We often experience the most conflict with those to whom we are closest. This can cause strain and disconnect in our most valued relationships. While this can cause strain at any time, it can be especially prominent during pregnancy and the first few years after children are born. Parenting can be incredibly rewarding…. and one of the most challenging times in our lives. It can also be an opportunity for change and growth. Individual, couples, and family therapy can help you reconnect with others, deepen and strengthen your ability to support and nurture your relationships, and your children.

I strive to create a safe, respectful space in which we can work together to understand the current problems and conflicts impacting your life, and identify self-defeating patterns that keep you from reaching your full potential. We will watch to see how and when these patterns occur in the therapeutic process itself and work to trace problems back to their roots in earlier periods of your life. By gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves, we attain greater freedom to choose how we wish to live, to strengthen our relationships and find joy in life.

I support my clients to find safety, rest, and joy within themselves, often in the midst of very challenging circumstances. I work with folks healing from trauma – especially childhood, religious, sexual, and relational traumas – those exploring their authentic identities, and those who want support in life transitions large and small. I believe that you are the expert of your own experience. Together we will create a space where you can explore deeper layers of your experience, to understand, and potentially reframe, strategies that no longer serve you, and to take steps towards a richer connection with yourself and others.

I realize that seeking therapy can feel overwhelming and I am here to support you through your healing journey, one that is unique to you and shaped by you. I am passionate about helping others heal and have experience working with PTSD, generational trauma, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I firmly believe in the impact that our past experiences have on how we think, feel, and view ourselves, but they do not need to define who we are. Together, we can identify old patterns of behavior, unhelpful thoughts, and the impact of past trauma to support you in moving forward into a new place of wellness.

I enjoy supporting people who are experiencing various challenges, including grief and loss, trauma, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. We often feel terrified to face our own emotional pain and get to know the parts of ourselves that are feeling helpless, hopeless, or disempowered. I believe that each of us has everything we need within ourselves to find healing and growth. It is my job to support you to connect to yourself and find that path within you. I utilize various techniques to help you cope with (and feel) difficult emotions, connect to your mind and body, and understand the impact of your past and present.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in 97209?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
