Honestly, relationships are at the core of who we are. Whether it’s your relationship with yourself, your partner, your children, or your friends... when these bonds are healthy, they help you thrive and heal many wounds. But sometimes conflict can get in the way of what you want for your life and relationships. That may be trauma, beliefs that hurt instead of help, new mental health symptoms, or behaviors that aren’t working for you - most of these stem from some kind of relationship. My role is to come alongside you and help you learn new ways to understand and relate to these struggles.

I understand reaching out for help is not easy and how much courage and hard work it takes for people to make real change, find hope, and create a meaningful life. I specialize in helping people who have troubled relationships, low self-esteem, addiction, depression, and anxiety. I have many years of experience working with clients in sorting out how mood (e.g., depression and anxiety), personality, and substance use interfere with changing behavior and reaching goals.

I work with clients across the lifespan and provide parent consultations when working with children/adolescents. I provide support for anxiety, behavioral challenges, depression, family conflict, grief and loss, life transitions, peer relationships, school issues, and trauma. I believe the therapeutic relationship is the foundation for any work we will do together. When you feel safe within the therapeutic relationship, that is when real healing or progress can occur. Ever made to feel never enough? Do you fear how others would react if you were to make a mistake, share your authentic self, or reveal your family or relationship is not as picture perfect? Are you haunted by your past, worried about the future, or feel in some way “broken”? We all learn ways to cope when in an invalidating environment. Perhaps you are the supportive rock for your friends that believe you have it all together. Maybe you learned it was safest to be invisible, perfect, or take care of everyone but yourself. These strategies have at one time helped, but are now keeping you from living the life that you want.

In a world that encourages the creation of a chaotically tough exterior, I want to work with you to find your strength in peace and softness. Being vulnerable is often very scary, but bravery is defined by facing your fears, not by the absence of them. It is my goal to provide a space where you feel safe enough to tap into your own power and help you cultivate the assertiveness needed to create a life of your design, something we all deserve but rarely give ourselves permission to have.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
