Life is hard, but there are strategies and tools you can learn to help you overcome challenges and move towards happiness. The way to start creating a joyful life begins by understanding what the problem is and what actions you can take to create change. I love helping individuals, couples, and families learn to recognize unhealthy patterns, remove stumbling blocks and start creating a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Excited. Persistent. Results oriented and good sense of humor. That's me! You’re not alone when you say, “I really don’t want to get out of bed today, just a little while longer,” as you pull the covers over your head. Today feels gray, you feel overwhelmed, even numb and the nagging “duties” of the day pull at your attention, one after another. You want to scream and hide under a rock to make it all go away for a minute, but you open your eyes to see the list of “should’s” just get longer. And worse yet, you feel alone in all of it.

Nothing has been more exciting and gratifying for me as a therapist than the moment I can see someone recognizing the patterns and thoughts which have been keeping them from the happiness and joyful life they deserve. Those moments can be the spark that starts a whole new way of thinking and living for someone. In a world that is often rich in negative emotions and destructive behavior, every new spark that can help change the way a single person feels and acts can help others too. Every great journey begins with a single step.

To reveal and work through one's difficulties can be scary, but fulfilling and enriching. Thus, I work to create a trusting, supportive environment free of judgement that allows for a safe space to dive into the depths of one's unique story and what brings them to treatment. Therapy can be a powerful process in which one can gain new insights, decrease distress and suffering, uncover strengths and limitations, and improve relationships both with one's self and others. I will treat you with compassion, empathy, encouragement, and honesty as we navigate the therapeutic process together.

I practice from a place of empathy and genuine understanding as I've known what it's like to experience tragedy. My passion is working with each client who wants help and is ready to work with me in their journey towards strong and positive mental health. I've also been known to incorporate a little humor throughout the healing process. I look forward to working with clients who are committed to the work we do and will continue to attend counseling even when the work seems very challenging. In order for counseling to be successful, there must be a mutual respect, and honesty is crucial to the therapeutic relationship.

With recent changes in our world and communities, adolescents and young adults are bombarded with stress and insecurity leading to mental health challenges. Anxiety, depression, and loneliness can lead to increased isolation, conflicts in parent/child relationships, suicidal thoughts and feelings of hopelessness. They may need a life line, a map to find their way.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
