I may integrate mindfulness as well to help you live more in the present and relate more skillfully to your emotions and thoughts so you make better choices.

I adjust my approach to fit your needs and preferences. Expert in transgender, ESA, VA, immigration, and trauma evaluations. Advanced in trauma, addiction, relationships, and mindfulness (I write about them on Psychology Today). You can usually expect change in 2-8 sessions. As a psychology doctor and professor, I’m updated on the latest research, and am dedicated, caring, and collaborative. You should feel understood, hopeful, and safe in your confidential therapy.

We are perfectly imperfect beings wholly deserving of authentic and meaningful lives. For many of us, we strive to feel heard, be seen, and accepted for who we are. Being disconnected from our truth can lead to feelings of loneliness, hopelessness, and helplessness. Through the many seasons of our lives, we are met with unforeseen challenges that impact our ability to navigate life easefully. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of immense strength. When we feel lost or unsure of what to do next, inviting an empathic other on our journey can be a life changing experience.

I have worked with those that believed in lies about themselves after a traumatic incident, childhood, or their own minds. These lies can be crippling and result in anxiety, depression, addictions, school related difficulties, stress, anger, parenting, communication difficulties, relational issues, family problems, job dissatisfaction and more. I have over 20 years of clinical experience and have come to believe that fostering a trusting and compassionate therapeutic relationship can help us feel empowered and confident in our own healthy sense of self. As a South Asian/Indian woman who identifies as a person of color and within the LGBTQIA+ community, I recognize a need for folks to have a therapist who understands these issues. My approach is collaborative, client-centered, strength-based, and solution-focused. Mazu Master, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

Hope is something I would wish for my clients to take away in therapy. Everyone can benefit from feeling a little hope; cultivating hope can be a shield and a path to moving forward. In therapy, cultivating hope could look like creating clear and achievable goals that matter to you and speak to your values. It might also look like learning to be unafraid of uncertainties but rather be excited and curious about it. Cultivating hope in therapy also translates into learning that we all deserve to have healthy relationships, boundaries, respect, and genuine connection. Lastly, cultivating hope requires commitment and practice.

You have learned early on that you had to keep it together. You are used to being the strong one, putting on a brave face, and pushing your emotions aside so you won't be seen as someone who can't handle it. Often, you find yourself prioritizing others' needs over your own, and it's been quite a while since you truly prioritized self-care. You find yourself in a state of constant exhaustion, both physically and emotionally. The weight of the world seems to rest heavily on your shoulders. Deep down, there's a part of you that yearns to rediscover yourself, to speak your truth, and to break free from self-doubt.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
