Aloha! Life is full of change and transition, and that means life is also full of times when we need extra support to manage the anxiety, depression, and/or distress that often comes along with it. If this sounds like you, you're in the right place. I like to think of myself as a treatment partner, not someone who sits silently while you figure out your own path forward. That means I take a holistic, collaborative approach to treatment, with a nod to evidence-based practices, such as CBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused, as well as using EMDR and trauma-focused CPT for PTSD and other trauma-related symptoms.

I believe that healing happens when we pay attention to all the parts that make us whole—our mind, body, and soul. My theoretical orientation is influenced by Family Systems, Attachment Theory, Emotionally-Focused, Humanistic-Experiential, and Narrative approaches to treatment. This means that we will be going on an emotional journey together in which I will use an eclectic combination of clinical theories and techniques to help guide my work. I believe that the lack of emotional awareness and avoiding uncomfortable emotions can cause harm to our mind, body, and soul. My hope is to help you get to know yourself better.

We all can suffer from trauma, stress, loss, pain, relationships, and work issues. Sometimes it is very difficult to ask for help. Seeking counseling does not mean that there is something wrong with us. Seeking counseling helps us to process those feelings and manage symptoms. I do not like to label my clients. I am more interested in guiding my clients and helping them during that process. Helping you during those difficult times to manage and cope are my top priorities as a therapist. I specialize in helping you manage your daily struggles and help you to regain that sense of usefulness again!

When dealing with children and family issues, I believe compassion, experience, and individual attention lead to positive outcomes and growth. My passion for working with children, adolescents and families has been molded by almost 15 years of experience in an array of community outreach settings serving both children and adults. I share a dedicated interest in multi-cultural issues and use an individual's cultural background to inform treatment. As a bilingual Spanish-speaking therapist, I aim to provide all my clients with the quality mental health services they deserve.

I am here to encourage you to explore your joy, challenge areas where you struggle to connect and create a path to a life that is full of resonance and enthusiasm. If your goal is to address issues related to society and culture or have someone who deeply understands alternative lifestyles, those are my favorite types of clients. Carey Sebera, LCSW. I allow the client to lead with their hopes and desires for therapy, and get to know what drives them. Therapy is not one size fits all, and I quickly assess what may or may not be effective with each person. Seeing patterns and addressing difficult behaviors is an important part of a therapist's role, but it takes willingness and honesty from a client. We only know what you tell us! I am trained in EMDR, trauma, and addiction. I look forward to helping you achieve the life you desire.

I am energized by working with queer BIPOC femmes who are navigating life and wanting to get in touch with the inner confidence that sometimes gets lost. Especially for those who are children of immigrants or first generation cycle breakers - we can struggle with perfectionism, imposter syndrome, betrayal of boundaries, or an unfamiliar relationship to self. I welcome all parts of you as we go on this journey with the self-compassion and softness you deserve.

Feminist Therapists
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
