My approach includes mindfulness, psychoanalysis, and attachment therapy and is effective with codependency, narcissism, parenting problems, grief, postpartum changes, self-esteem issues, bipolar symptoms, anger, and trauma.
Are you someone who has accomplished much in life but finds certain aspects increasingly difficult or resistant? Whether you're navigating complex relationships, managing stress and anxiety, or interested in making changes, I work with individuals who are invested in understanding themselves and progressing through the challenges they encounter, both internal and external. My clients are often curious about how their experiences and perceptions influence how they interact with people in their lives.

Is your child struggling? Children, teens and their parents face unprecedented challenges in today's rapidly changing world. Anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, attention problems, school stress, difficult relationships, life transitions, chronic illness, grief, mental illness and other experiences compound the inherent challenges of growing up. You and your child may feel discouraged and alone braving these challenges yet experiencing challenges is universal and affirms our connection to each other. How different would life be if we instinctively embraced this truth and reached out for connection to grow through challenges together?

My approach to therapy is based on each individual’s inner strength and resources, and resiliency to every day stress and adversities that life tends to present. I focus on practical applications drawn from various theories as a means to provide each individual the most meaningful treatment for healing and change. One of the most empowering and healing methods I use in my psychotherapy is creating a caring, collaborative relationship built on mutual trust and respect, providing a safe environment free from judgment, and support through active listening and empathy.

My practice centers around teaching people principles on how to access their own innate psychological health, and how to utilize this understanding for their own well-being. This can include a healthier concept of self, a more productive way of viewing difficulties and overcoming challenges in life, and how to establish more meaningful relationships. I help client's suffering from depression, anxiety, attention issues, addictions, emotional regulatory disorders and relational conflict learn skills such as CBT, DBT, 3 principles training, and mindfulness to help better their lives. Life's a journey, with many unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes we need someone to talk to, someone to share our thoughts and feelings, dreams and fears, and help guide us toward resolution. I want to help my clients navigate this path, and to also experience the possibilities of living their best life possible. I work with older teens and adults, and also specialize in women's issues across the lifespan, as well as those with health concerns. College students are a special interest, as are educators, as I’ve worked as a teacher and school counselor and understand the stress and dynamics associated with the profession.

I provide therapy in a supportive, authentic and normalizing environment. I work to help others feel empowered as they work toward their goals and recognize how much they are able to shape their own lives when provided with effective tools and insight. I believe that the appropriate use of humor is extremely helpful and I strongly believe that it is not my place to judge you or to impose my values on you during the therapeutic process. I view counseling as a team effort where the counselor and client work together.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
