NOTE: New Day will be (unavailable) on vacation May 28 - June 11. I’m a recovering perfectionist. And I thought I was doing pretty good with my journey, until I experienced an unexpected major stroke. That major life crisis was, ironically, a great opportunity to reassess what I was doing to take care of myself…physically and emotionally. As a high-achieving Black woman who was recovering from perfectionism, turned into a Black woman who is a stroke survivor, I’m passionate about helping other high-achieving women of color to pause, to breathe, and to assess what they are doing to take care of themselves…physically and emotionally.

Do you ever feel like you are constantly running on the hamster wheel of life? Life around you is happening and you feel stuck watching everyone and everything move past or around you like everyone is living their best life...except for you. If you think about it, the running wheel is actually an exercise device created to build strength. You just need to know how to harness the energy and work with your present life to build something better. In our society we look for the quick fix. Make it happen in a flash is not where reality lies, but allow me to help you on a journey to living life with more ease and clarity.

Sometimes we imagine our life to be just a little different. And although we can not control everything in our life, we can at the very least work on ourselves. When we work on ourselves, for example, anxiety, PTSD, depression, grief, to name a few, we can learn to cope with the things we can not change to make our tomorrow just a bit better.

Maybe you don't feel it now but, you are on the way to the best version of yourself. Go You! But some growth requires exercising your greatest muscles, your mind and heart. Right now you may be struggling to find a solution or fighting against some self limiting beliefs and things beyond your control.

I have worked with children and adults for 25+ years. In my practice, I provide an individualized written treatment plan to meet the client's needs. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBT focuses on changing an individual's thoughts in order to change his or her behavior and emotional state. It has been proven to be highly effective in many areas such as anxiety and depression. DBT is a modified form of CBT where clients are taught mindfulness (living in the moment), how to tolerate and cope with stress, regulate emotions and develop healthy interpersonal relationships.

I have always desired to understand feelings, behaviour and the human mind; always been driven toward solving the questions that start with why. However, after leading many spontaneous counselling sessions with friends, witnessing the empowering feeling it brings to simply aid someone find a way forward, instead, I also became driven toward solving the questions that start with how. I would deem it a privilege to take the time with someone to answer how they can move forward from their situation and how they can deal with whatever hand life has dealt them, as well as being able to diagnose any conditions before initiating treatment.

Motherhood can leave you feeling lost and overwhelmed, no matter how much you try to manage it all. This might feel like your everyday reality if you’re a postpartum or early motherhood mom. You might feel like you're losing yourself while trying to meet the endless demands. It's not just the sleepless nights or the never-ending to-do lists; it's the emotional toll of trying to be perfect. It’s not that you don’t love your children or love being a mom, but you dream of things being different, of being able to manage motherhood while embracing your own needs and desires. You want to be present and fulfilled in your life.

Being everything to everyone is exhausting, builds resentment, and leaves us feeling irritable, angry, and sad. You often don’t have time for yourself and you may feel that no one truly sees you for who you are or all that you offer. The anxiety that comes from living this life can be stifling, confusing, and frustrating, but when exactly are you supposed to find the time to deal with all your feelings when you are constantly responding to everyone else's. The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.

It is really not working out like I thought it would. Conflict at home, conflict on the job and it seems like conflict with myself. It seems as if many of things I have wanted in life have not yet happened. I am falling behind people my age. Some situations get better, then two other situations get worse. It seems as if my trying to be positive about the situation has not changed anything. It seems so exhausting. I have a good job and good family but something is missing. I go to church, pray, I help others (when I need help it seems as if there is no one available). Why am I not satisfied or happy? Things are just not quite right.

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
