Struggles and hardships can be a natural part of life. We all need a supportive ally as we navigate through stressful times. I see my role as a therapist as one of a caregiver, a provider of strength, and a collaborative problem-solver. I have experience with a wide variety of people, including individuals without a diagnosis to those diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anxiety and depression. I am LGBTQ+, sex worker, kink, and polyamory knowledgeable and affirming, and greatly enjoy working with these populations.

I came from a family who believed worry and anxiety was a primary love language and they used unhealthy coping skills including drugs, alcohol, and gambling. I know first-hand that it is difficult to break family patterns and it is not a one-time fix. I understand how mental illness and addiction impact the whole family. I myself was well into my adulthood before I realized that just because I was not abusing drugs and alcohol, I was caught in the insanity by trying to control those family members who were as well as those who I thought were enabling. I went to therapy and learned how to set and maintain healthy boundaries.

Relationships can be difficult. We long for meaningful connection, understanding, and support from our closest relationships. But sometimes, we find conflict and alienation instead. Perhaps an "Other" has taken your place in a relationship-pornography, a physical affair, an addiction. Maybe dysfunction has spread throughout your family, building high walls between you and your loved ones. Perhaps your greatest struggle is relating not to others...but to yourself. You become vaguely aware that something is wrong. Something foundational has cracked. Feeling lost, you wonder how life led you to this deeply uncomfortable place.

Dr. Courtney Greer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and is clinically trained and credentialed in perinatal mental health. I specialize in children and parenting. If your child has high anxiety, seems sad or withdrawn, or has had behavior changes, you might consider counseling. Sometimes the older kids just need someone besides family to talk to about what's going on. If your child is particularly challenging, maybe they have a lot of meltdowns, is aggressive, sad, or has had a traumatic event occur then I may be able to help. Has your child had a lot of medical procedures? Play therapy could help. If you are college-aged & lost or stressed/depressed/anxious, we can work together to get you back on track.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
