Perhaps confusion of the past, the unknown of the future, or inability to make sense of what is happening now led you here. One thing you should know is that, so often, people enter my office weathering one of their largest storms to date. Or maybe, it’s not their largest storm, but a battle continuously claiming defeat. It’s exhausting; life can absolutely be exhausting. Walking through those doors, meeting someone you don’t know, and sharing your life story with them can also be unsettling. I will do my best to help you feel comfortable and at ease throughout the duration of your counseling journey.

Dr. Bonny Stewart is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Specialist in School Psychologist, and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. She has advanced specialization working with children and families. Her passion is to help parents find answers and understanding to help their child succeed at home, school, and in all aspects of their lives.

I am a licensed psychologist dedicated to working with children and families. I treat a number of childhood emotional and behavioral disorders and have advanced training and experience in the treatment of mood disorders and anxiety disorders (e.g., OCD, social phobia, and selective mutism). I also have unique experience in providing psychotherapy to children and adolescents whose emotional problems occur alongside developmental differences, such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or mental retardation.

Life can often be hard and unexpected challenges can happen to anyone. I believe that having the support of someone in our corner can help us discover our unique qualities so we can emerge from difficulties stronger than we ever thought possible. I work with children, adolescents, and adults with a variety of presenting concerns. My areas of interest include play therapy, anxiety, depression, self-harm, self-esteem and behavioral issues. I have specialized training in play therapy, adolescent counseling, autplay therapy and parent-child relationship therapy.

I have had extensive training in the field of play therapy, a developmentally appropriate approach to working with children struggling with a variety of issues. At Acorn to Oak I offer testing to clients ranging from preschool age through adulthood. Are you a parent whose child is struggling in school? Are you an adult worried about your cognitive processes due to a health event, accident, or family history of dementia? I offer testing to figure out what's going on and then recommend treatment options. Additionally, we offer a unique Skills Training program for clients to come weekly for cognitive behavior therapy, individualized academic assistance, or focused training based on behavorial, developmental, or life skills needs.

Seeing your kid struggle is one of the toughest things to do as a parent or caregiver. Our children cannot always express their thoughts and feelings through words, and this can lead to frustration and confusion for both parent and child. Children express their thoughts and feelings through play and their toys are their words. When we allow children to play alongside therapeutic interventions, children can tell us so much about what is going on in their lives. Whether your child is experiencing grief, sadness, anxiety, anger, or school problems, they deserve some extra help!

Looking for a therapist for your child or adolescent can be daunting. Every child's situation and needs are different. I provide a warm, energetic, compassionate atmosphere to help make my clients and their families feel at ease. Whether that means talking while playing ping pong or talking via telehealth. I believe that when a child is in their element, they are more likely to be receptive to the therapeutic process. This is why our office has several play and activity rooms. I also believe that communication with parents is the key to success, so I communicate frequently with parents via email or with parent meetings.
