We all face difficult and confusing times. My goal is to assist clients in a confidential and compassionate environment by providing therapy services in the home. My specialties include issues of aging, grief and bereavement, chronic illness, and life transitions. I spent many years working as a hospice social worker. It was a natural transition to have a practice that comes to the client', hopefully with dignity and humor. I have a passion for senior issues and learn from my clients daily.

Supervised by Dr. Bernis Riley, PsyD, LPC S. Are you experiencing the symptoms of anxiety or depression? Are you struggling with a past trauma? No one wants to experience pain and suffering, yet we can learn and grow from those experiences. In our broken world, you may be like so many people who feel broken and hopeless, who struggle to find their purpose in life. The good news is that there is hope and there is a Savior who died for you and loves you. Whatever issues you are struggling with, God's word assures us, and my own experiences have confirmed, that we can learn and grow and reach the full potential God has for us.

We are all designed to be in a relationship with others. However, sometimes relationships can be overcome with unforeseen conflict, challenges, and lapses in communication that may be difficult to navigate. As a clinician, my training assists me in working with families, individuals, and couples in uncovering strengths and reconnecting families.

When trauma goes untreated, we can become triggered in our everyday life, struggle with negative beliefs about ourselves, and can start feeling overwhelmed and stuck. We can even end up with physical pain, issues with sleep, feeling completely shut down, or always on edge. Trauma is not something we can always talk our way out of and you might find yourself actively avoiding talking about what you went through or feeling like talking about it isn't helping you feel better. As an EMDR trained therapist, I am passionate about and trained to help people get unstuck and get relief from their trauma.

The client and I are partners in developing the skills necessary for managing the stresses of life while determining what a meaningful life looks like for them. Although we look at the past to learn from it, the client and I generally focus on the present and future and the unique strengths of the client. Typically, clients come to see me when their previous experiences with traditional "talk" therapy haven't helped to resolve their symptoms. Trauma and stress have an emotional, psychological and physical impact, but we often need to start treatment at the most basic level: calming the nervous system. I see clients who are experiencing chronic pain, illness, addiction, PTSD and other common co-occurring disorders including Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) or Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES). All of these issues can be treated using empirically proven techniques that address the whole person - body, mind and spirit.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
