“Live life to the fullest.” “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” These are great, but life is more complex than cliché quotes. As your counselor, it is my pleasure to partner with you to find real joy in life again. True freedom does take work and can feel terrible as you work through the pain, but is it worth it? 100%! You are worthy of happiness, freedom, and wholeness, even if you don’t currently feel it.

There is often a crossroads at the point of pain, of hope and hopelessness.
Licensed with supervision in Idaho, Nebraska, and Iowa. I specialize in tele-health treatment for clients recovering from significant injuries. Difficulties following such life-changing events can include depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, and PTSD among others. Most everyone wants to re-engage in a meaningful life post-injury, but sometimes even the possibility feels distant. I feel confident there is always a next step toward our goals, no matter the situation. I enjoy coming to know and support clients who are courageously taking the next step.

I work with clients struggling with a variety of issues, including Anxiety/Panic, ADHD, Depression, Grief, Life Transitions, Chronic Pain, Mood Disturbance, Self-Care, and many more. However, I am currently only accepting adults with ADHD or suspected ADHD as new clients. Therapy tends to work best when a client provides as much information as possible, is open and honest, and puts in the effort and work necessary to improve upon their life.

I work best with adolescent and adult clients who appreciate a direct, to-the-point approach. I give lots of feedback and make my thoughts known. This approach tends to open up awarenesses that may have been unknown for a very long time. It is exciting to see this process unfold in individual psychotherapy.

My therapeutic lens is rooted in the tenants of social work and social justice. As a clinician I meet clients where they are and recognize that no person functions outside of their environment. So as we delve into issues of mental health symptoms, we will also be investigating how society at large plays a role in our health. I lean heavily on psychodynamic processing and a focused mindfulness practice called Brainspotting. I also engage clients through CBT, DBT, and narrative therapy. I am LGBTQIA+ friendly (and a part of the community, too), and am continually in the process of being anti-racist.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
